10-28-08
Well, sitting here trying to catch up, suddenly I heard a rattling sound against the window beside me. Looking up, I developed an instant and massive chill (not all that difficult, I admit, considering the head cold I’ve been fighting for TEN razzlefratchin days). It was sleeting, hard, out there ( and me with no batteries for my camera). :(
The sleet didn’t last long, though it was comical watching the squirrel at the feeder using his tail as an umbrella. Unfortunately, it was followed by about 5 minutes of snow.
As much as I love winter, I’m not ready yet.

As some of you know, a couple of weeks ago, GrandmaT, generous lady that she is, offered my DH, Rock, one of her African Violets that he had fallen in love with, if we could figure out a way to get it.. Our discussions continued and evolved from that point, to include a small plant swap, if and when we could get together.

Last Saturday was the big day!!

DH and I drove down (109 miles one way) to visit Gran and her DH, LJ Russell, and spent a truly lovely afternoon. We chatted, and chatted, and had a lovely lunch, and chatted some more, and traded plants (I gave her a clump of my pink asiatic lily, one of my red asiatic lily, and a nice-sized one of that pretty lemony-yellow daylily), and we chatted some more.

She sent DH home with the blue and white violet that started it all, one of her teacup violets, and starts of her lovely iridescent white violet. He figured out a way to protect them from our “African-Salad” munching cats (they are in a 10 gallon aquarium). Lol.

She also sent me home with a nice piece of her Little Grapette daylily, one of her mini hollyhocks, and a nice-sized wild geranium, all of which are nicely settled into their new “nests” and are doing quite nicely, thanks to the rain which followed us home Saturday, and hung around off and on yesterday.

Bed Edging #1: Concrete

Poor hubby. Kid called on his way to deliver grandkids for last day of school. “Hey, Mom, There’s a guy putting in a new driveway here on Old Kawkawlin Rd. He says you can have all the busted up old stuff you want to haul away!” So guess what hubby was doing by 0715 ! We loaded up between 1200 and 1500 pounds of concrete chunks, hauled it home, and unloaded it.
Got enough to edge both shade beds, and at least make a good start on the fence bed, one layer high. Will need more, eventually, because I’d like to have at least two layers.
Now I get to move plants to put in the edging, but not ‘til it cools down some, it’s already 82 and humid, so I don’t want to risk an asthma attack.

Fence Bed #1: Fence Bed #1

Okay, I’ve decided to post my “maybes” and “what ifs” for the fence bed here.

Right now I have enough plants to fill a bed about 1 foot by 20.I would like to enlarge it to about 2 or 3 feet by 40.
I know I want some height right at the fence ( a 3 foot chain link ugliness ), so now I just need to figure out what plants I want there.
Then I’d like to put in some medium height in front of those, and then a “layer” of shorter ones still.

Big problem is, I have no idea what plants I want. I have no clue what shade-to-partial-sun plants will acheive the heights I want. The sunny end of the bed will be easy, I’ve got 30 years experience with sun-lovers, lol!

So I guess I need to start some lists for the heights I want.

3 foot or taller med height short

hollyhock sun Chinese lantern sun
delphinium sun iris part to sun
poppy sun
