i’ve decided to plant another garden this year…i volunteered at a community garden in my neighborhood a few years ago while unemployed and it was a relaxing and gratifying..and although i consider myself a novice….i vowed that in my quest to continue towards the road of eating better that i would resurrect my garden and become a better gardener!
spring has sprung here in atlanta and the blossoming trees look fantastic as the early rains helped to ensure the enduring beauty of God. my landlord planted two trees in our front yard some years ago, and they are tall, strong, and beautiful and provides great privacy for me as well as a scenic backdrop to the front of my building…okay, back to the garden…it was my plan to visit the plot this weekend, but rains kept me away…although i wasn’t complaining, i knew that i had to get to the plot soon…the best planting time will be over and my mission to stick to one of my resolutions would be dashed…
as it turns out this first monday of april here is windy and the possibility of snow looms for this evening. it is typical atlanta…i am glad that i didn’t get out to the garden – although i am not ready to actually plant, i want to get over there to ready my bed for planting…
i saw some cute new tools on urbangardencasual’s website that i want to look deeper into…anyway, that will be my reward for at least putting some seeds in the ground. i am starting a search for heirloom and organic seeds…some things i want to grow from seeds and others from seedlings. the garden coordinator wants to give me another plot, although i would prefer to have my old one, she feels this is a better plot, so will get in touch with her to get a good date to meet and take over my plot…
in the mean time, i have dedicated my crops to supplying my office salad fixings, and now i decide which variety of greens i want to grow as well as carrots, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and onions.
i think i’m off to a good start, but i’m going to check my calender for this week and schedule some time in to begin clearing my bed…

wow, thanks for all the support! msdebbiep…i thought about the commitment aspect of this and you are right….it’s on! my plot is a 10×10. i found the garden journal i thought was packed downstairs, so i’ve thumbed through it and know what it expects. i actually bought it two years ago, but never used it…so much for preparation!
i’ve researched a few websites for seeding ideas and i’ll visit another organic commuinity garden during their annual plant sale to purchase some plants…great ideas, but now i’m just waiting for spring to get here…at this rate it feels like it’s a late train, but it gives me more time to plan and research. it is interesting to see the many healthy ways a garden plot can be prepared…who knew!!!??? i actually want to solicit food waste from my daughter’s school for composting, but i’m not ready to ask, store, or pick it up…i rarely cook, so my efforts at providing soil nutrients will be little to none…with that type of track record, i should be eager to eat more items that can be consumed raw.
emailing my garden organizer this evening…after this post, while i have the momentum going to see when i can see my new plot.
i’m hesitant to do more research…one link leads to another and before i know it will be 1am!
just going through my email will bring gardening newsletters and update and i am on the urban agriculture committee of my neighborhood planning unit, so not having a garden will probably get me fired! one am, here i come…

Yes, as MsDeb says … keep us posted on progress and procrastination (sp??). We’ll be here for ya!!
I say pretty exciting days ahead for ya along with a lot of work. But somehow, at least for me, working in the garden, while difficult and tiring at times, is always so worth it. I love that you can instantly see the work you have put in, even if it is nothing more than seeing all that compost worked in and the dirt all turned over waiting to be planted.
Good luck with everything!! :-)
