I am 36 yrs old with a wife and 2 boys (12yrs old and a 2 yr old). I am a Federal Correctional Officer but used to work with people who where dual diagnosised. But my love as far as jobs go would of been to be a Chef.
As a kid growing up on a farm we always had gardens. Mostly veggies and plants so I am really new to this. There is so much terminology that I need to learn. Determinate and indetereminate.

I would to say Thank You to all the Debbies’ for welcoming me to this website and would like to say Thank You to Damocles for inviting me to this web site. It usually takes me a while to figure out the web site so you all with have to patient with me. I am moving out to the country in March so as far as my gardens go not really sure but this is what I do know it is a one acre property and has many small gardens. They had a vegetable garden and a garden that is an old time bed rail with head board. There is a bid old apple tree in the back yard and a ton of lavender. Some if not all will moved to put in Blueberries. I am going to try and put pictures ofthe house and property but they were taken on Dec. 27th so you really can get a fell for it. But for now that is all.

I have been a flower gardener for near 30 years now … flowers I know … vegetables not so much. What exactly are “Black Plum” tomatoes?? Are they sweeter, bigger ??? I plan on trying my hand at a small veggie garden this year so asking lots of questions when I hear of a vegetable that is new to me. Thanks!! :-)

All I know about them is that they are for salads or eating them on their own. They are a Russian Variety and that is about all I know. They sounded pretty cool so I figure if I am jumping in with both feet I might as well take the leap and go for it all. I am acyually more nervous about the San Marzano I no no0t much about them bu tI want to can sauce and chili sauce so I though tthey sounded ideal.
And I am think that when I move the bed rail I will plant the blueberries and leave the lavender. But that is a whole lot of lavender.

It is said that lavender produces an epicure’s honey. Any interest in keeping bees?

Thank you bncprez … I honestly had never heard of Black Plum tomatoes. Canning … how delicious!!! My grandfather had a HUGE garden; and he and my grandmother canned everything!!! Made the most delicious pickles, tomato sauce and plum jam. Never got any of their recipes, unfortunately. What childhood memories I have of those days.
We have a wonderful Farmer’s Market close to us. So I did freeze some of the vegetables for winter.
I truly wish you luck with everything. Sounds like you truly have some good plans. Besides experimenting a bit is a good thing; especially with the planting of different types of flowers and vegetables. In my mind that is half the fun of gardening. Be sure to let us know of your progress.
I thought I read somewhere, in passing, that you could dry lavender and make wonderful smelling “packets”. Or did I misunderstand?

Totally! You can make up lavender saches with some dried leaves and keep it on your pillow during the day. The scent permeates your pillow and gives you a dose of peaceful sleep-inducing aromatherapy at bedtime. We had one a few seasons ago, and I forgot all about it!

You know I would keep bees but seen as how I am going to be new to the neighbourhood I do not want get off on the wrong foot with the neighbours. It is outside of Orillia but in a small sub division.
I remember when I was a child my grandmother on Dad’s side used to have the best peach and pear preserves. I would love to do that and grow my own but I am in the wrong zone. But I may start to buy them by the bushel and start that way. I remember wanting to drink the juice in the mason jars, oh my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

When I was young and foolish, I used to can everything I could get my hands on. And living in the Okanagan,B.C.,that means they have everything your little heart desires!
The peaches and the bing cherries were my favorites.
Still remember having to pull to the side of the road to eat my peach as it was so juicy, it made driving dangerous!
But, darn, were they ever fantastic. Tasted like the sun!!

I am back up and running. Thank You GrandaT everything is well. We have finally moved into our new house and still have a lot un-packing to do.
I had an opportunity to talk to the lady that we bought the house off and she was nice enough to give a map of the front and back yards with all the plants labeled. One sahe told me was like a memorial garden so I thinking that I am going to leave it. But would it be bad if I moved them I think she said they were roses.
Anyways I also think they are more wild gardens here and there than the gardens that I am used to. So I do not know what I am going to do with them.
Anyways I have to go and find some flourscent lights tomorrow maybe head down to the hydroponics store to start my planting. I can not plant here until after the May 24th long weekend so I have a while yet. Anyways I will be on here more now so here is to good planting and harvesting later this year.

I wish I had a scanner to show you guys the maps of the front and back yards. And all the different flowers. Their is a bunch of diffeent kinds of Tulips, different types of roses, lilacs (a personnal favourite of mine) and lots more I will post all later when I find the map again.
Of course as the snow melts I see the bed frame is still there. So my idea for the first year is this I am going to watch everything that comes up and then make a few decisions after that about transplanting and such.
And I really want to see, but impossible with the two feet of snow that still exists is all these gardens and if they are actual gardens or part of the grass.

Hey good news I think that I may have been upgraded to a 5a Zone from a 4b. I was talking to an arborist today about not being able to plant peach and pear trees and she looked at me with that confused poor fool look that most women have prefected (Especially my wife). Anyway cheers
