Since I started “Need 4 Seed” in February, we have helped over 35 families! I have received some donations of seed, and I basically pack them up as “Veggie Gardens in a Bag”. I send out as much variety as possible.
With food prices going through the roof, gardening for food makes sense. Even if someone supplied all their own veggies in a garden this summer, I would venture to say with the rising cost of everything else, their food bill will not go down at all.
I am hoping to do a lot of seed-packing in the fall (quite time consuming), and do a large mailing in Dec/Jan (‘09), and thereafter. I will accept donations at any time, and will do mailings throughout the season, but I hope to be able to keep that running smoothly because of doing a large winter mailing.
I have a Yahoo! site now of the project:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Need4Seed/?yguid=238450965
I hope to lean toward untreated and heirloom seeds, but I will not refuse any donations of this type. Hopefully, the Yahoo! site will help people learn how to save seed from year-to-year, and to help their neighbors.
Please check out the Yahoo! group, and join—even if you only wish to observe the progress.
I am really happy that things have gone well, and the project has been helpful.
Thanks!
Robin
