Part 1: definitely winter
Yes, indeed, it is definitely the winter season. Everything is covered with snow and a layer of ice from the rain/freezing rain we also had. Yesterday the winds howled and the snow blew and I snuggled up in a blanket. At one point, I did have to go outside to button down the hatches of the gazebo. The tarps were flying and the grommets were pulled out and I knew that our bonfire breakfasts were on hold until we got the last two walls complete. (which is also on hold until we can find some ...
Part 2: Planning Time
January 6, 2008 Inspired by my fellow gardeners here at GT, I have ordered a couple seed catalogues and have purchased a couple gardening magazines. With spring just a few months away (oh how the perspective changes once you get in the planning stage) I have decided that I need a clear plan of action for the my gardens and what I want to accomplish this year. Lacking Sketchup skills to draw out my plan, and being a “blank slate” when it comes to knowing about flowering ti...
Part 3: Garden of Light
Yesterday was a morning marvel, with the sun glistening on the frosted trees. I took a couple pictures and thought I’d share. I guess this is Mother Nature’s entry in the “Garden of Lights” event. She surely did a fabulous job with her gardens – and her lighting. My photography did not do it justice.
Part 4: Salt Spring Seeds - The Enticement
Feb 2 /08 So I get my Salt Spring Seeds catalogue this week and I’m having fun! Here are some of my considerations: Currant Tomatoes Large Beafsteak Tomato Baby Romaine Lettuce Mustard Kale Barley (this sounds like fun and will make a nice “grass” for my triangle garden) Flax Quinoa Peas Chick Peas Radish Leeks Parsnip Earth Chestnuts ( I have no idea what this is like but it sounds yummy) Beans Pie Pumpkins Hungarian Boldog Spice...
Part 5: Another Winter Morning
Feb. 7/08 I was headed upstairs to do some housework and out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of the sun glistening on the ice/snow covered trees. I quickly changed my plans (oh how hard it was to avoid housework) and grabbed my camera. These are (again) taken from my front door, looking out over my yard. Just thought I’d share my morning smile with you. (oh and in the centre bottom of the picture is a “rock” garden. The rock showed up in our la...
Part 6: Winter Awards Prize
My T-shirt arrived today!!! (for my Garden of Lights entry) Thanks Martin & Buli :) “The First GardenTenders T-shirt” Woo hoo
Part 7: At the Bird Feeder
Feb 3,2009 Sitting at the computer, watching for birds eating the seed that I put on the deck outside the patio door, I noticed some movement out of the corner of my eye. Something was having a snack. I looked and saw nothing but after a moment, I saw movement again. It was not a bird but a sneaky or brave little mouse having lunch! I grabbed the camera and of course he hid but after a moment or two he continued on his way, nibbling away at some seeds and then stopping at some snow, per...
Part 8: Winter Gardening - Phase 1
Dec 8/09 Last month the challenge was made to do some “Winter Gardening” (or winter sowing as I’ve also seen it called). For me, this will be my first time at doing this – on purpose. Every spring I see some plant that has surprisingly re-seeded itself. I’ve had lettuce come up, onions, pumpkins and squash, and numerous flowers including the giant sunflower I had this year. TYPE OF SEEDSToday, I thought it was time to really start thinking about what I want...
Part 9: Winter Gardening/Sowing
Dec 14/09 I was shopping today and thought I’d pick up some supplies for the Winter Gardening / Sowing Challenge. There’s a glitch—the two stores that I stopped at didn’t have any seeds. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen seeds at Home Hardware at odd times of the year.. but I’ve never looked before in the winter time. I still have some seeds from this past year but my options will be limited.
Part 10: WGC: Phase 3
Dec 26/09 After a little bit of this and a little bit of that my morning ended up with the potting soil sitting in my back hall calling my name. So, out came the milk jugs! A scan of my seeds left over from last year, I ended up sowing three containers: 1) louffah seeds2) Amish Paste Tomatoes3) Pickling Cucumbers (“Patio”) I didn’t have enough seeds to do the comparison experiment. Hopefully there will be some seeds in the stores soon and I can divide them up for...
Part 11: WGC #4: Seed Searching
Jan 7/10 Today I stopped in at our local feed and seed store and I was told that they usually have seeds the first week of January—just not yet, this year.I was also told that although they usually have them, they don’t put them out yet because typically people aren’t buying seeds yet. I’ll be stopping in, whenever I go through town over the next week or so and asking if they are in yet (since I won’t be seeing them on the shelves).
Part 12: 2010 Planning: trees
Feb 15/10 This morning I had a thought (this is where Rick says, “uh oh”). As my gardens expand I’m slowly running out of open space that is blessed with full sun. I still want to plant some more trees – fruit trees. (I think my Carolinian Forest planting has come to an end. I have a nice selection and my priorities now are on self-reliance, so edible produce.) The dilemma with “more trees” is that more trees equals more shade and I want to create som...
Part 13: Planning 2010 - take 3
Feb 25/10 After having completed plan A and plan B I think I have settled on my final (oh that’s funny) plan for 2010. Plants ordered include: honeyberry bushes (my blog) goji berry cranberry seabuckthorn persimmon tree I currently have a stretch of blueberry bushes that require acidic soil and the cranberries require the same type. Although I think I’ll just continue the line down along a path I might decide at the last minute to plant them “side by si...
