Part 5: Picnic '09

08-15-2009 03:17 PM by MsDebbieP | 25 comments »

Aug 15/09 Today was the Summer GT Picnic and what a lovely time I had. Jroot, his wife, Gail, (did I get that right? Oh my goodness I am bad with names!), and Iris joined Rick and I for an afternoon of garden talk. (Oh, and Gabby joined us as well.) -Gabby is the neighbour’s dog, for those who don’t know. First things first, we took a tour of the yards and I learned the names of some of my flowers (and have already forgotten the names.. yup- bad with names!). After cha...

Aug 16/09 Since it is supposed to rain in the near future I thought I’d better get my new plants into the ground. Thanks to Jroot for the new babies. (remember that I am bad with names… even though he labelled them all, well, i read them when I put them in the ground and that was at least half an hour ago. You expect me to remember the names forever?? haha) – Anyway, here is a list of what I can remember that he brought: bleeding heart (this plant went into my ̶...

Part 9: Home & Garden Show - somewhere in Ontario 2010

02-01-2010 07:51 AM by MsDebbieP | 29 comments »

Feb/10 (edited posting – original discussion talked about other options) We’re trying to find a garden show that is convenient for a group of us to attend. Ideas: Kitchener: in the past it was more home oriented than gardens (Mar 26/28) Toronto: not my favourite location and some say it is a very hectic show (mar 17/21) Stratford Home & Garden Show: Jroot is not available Forest: a long drive for many of us .. but possible. (I’d enjoy the drive). Stra...

Part 10: Garden Festival: Stratford, 2010 Part I

03-06-2010 04:29 PM by MsDebbieP | 10 comments »

March 6, 2010 With the morning sun shining brightly, Rick and I headed to Stratford. It was a gorgeous morning for the approx. 1 hour drive. At the show, we had a few minutes to wait until it opened. At the door, we were welcomed by this beautiful piece of art: I’m so glad we arrived early – we were able to see most of the exhibits without the crowds. During the day I did manage to bump into Jroot and his wife (my camera man had just went outside for some “fresh air...

Part 11: Garden Festival: Stratford, 2010 Part II

03-06-2010 05:21 PM by MsDebbieP | 9 comments »

March 6, 2010(continued from previous blog) Information from the Presentations that I attended Session 1: Low Maintenance Gardening- mulch: use shredded mulch (pine, cedar) because it will decompose better- don’t smother perennials, pull the mulch back from them a bit- don’t put mulch up around tree trunks as it will rot the bark and the tree will die- create a saucer with the mulch, creating a pocket to retain water - annuals are water hogs – use containers for annual...

Part 14: Garden Festival: Stratford, 2010 Part V - Rain Barrels

03-07-2010 10:22 AM by MsDebbieP | 3 comments »

March 7/10 This is from a pamphlet I picked up at the Stratford Garden Rain Barrels 30-40% of water used in the summer is on lawns and gardens rain water makes a great rinse when washing your hair mosquito prevention: screen, few drops of dish soap or guppies/goldfish (the fish work well if it rains weekly and the containers are full) use black hose for overflow, connecting rain barrels and for outlet. Algae will grow in a clear hose ...

02-25-2011 09:55 AM by MsDebbieP | 46 comments »

2/25/11 I’ve been picking up on some subtle hints that perhaps we need to plan another get-together for this summer (as well as one for 2012) and so I’m offering to host the event(s). Where: Southwestern Ontario (Brant County region) When: my daughter is to have her baby sometime around the first of June and we will be heading to BC in the summer to introduce Baby Aaron to his aunt, uncle, and cousin. So, I thought that the end of June would be a safe time for me to host ...

Part 22: A Visit by Horsetail

9/2/11 Yesterday, I was blessed with a visit by Horsetail. What a wonderful afternoon we had! Within 5 minutes of her arrival, the hummingbird moth made an appearance and we got to watch it work away at the hummingbird bush. I am so glad that it made an appearance and that we were in the right place at the right time! We took a tour of the yard while chatting about flowers, seeds, garden centres, and gardening experiences. Then, we sat on the deck and chatted some more. Not only d...

(May 28/13) Anyone interested in having a get-together again this year? Being busy with my grandson I haven’t had time to really garden this year and hadn’t thought about a get-together… but since I think I’ve had one every year for the past several years, it would be a shame not to have one again. Interested?Date? some day in July? (My location is SW Ontario, Canada about 1.5 hours west of Toronto)
