We were chatting with my brother yesterday about garden crops and dirt nutrients and the conversation ended up talking about onions.

Info I came away with:
  • onions like a consistent, steady level of water during their growing season
  • dry spells mixed with bursts of water result in the onion getting an outer skin embedded between layers of “onion”
  • the uneven watering also results in the rotten areas in the middle of the onions.
I had posted other advice from my brother earlier this year but have forgotten it already. I’ll have to go track it down.
  • if the tops of the onion greens bend over it is because they are lacking…... something!

Very interesting … since being on this site I have come to realize that growing “food” is not quite as simple as “throwing a few seeds into the ground”. I have always had a respect for farmers … but even more now.

Thanks Deb for all the tidbits!

Thank Deb

I grew red potatoe this year

I am attmpting to use them to find them all black and rotten inside

Disappointed I am.

Could this be cause by a month of steady pouring down rain or lack of something in the soil

It was a new area and new soil

I’ll ask my brother on Saturday when I see him.
My guess is the water but I’m not an expert on farming at all.

When we grew potatoes, it was in an area that had good drainage, although there was a river right beside the garden. I would figure, like yourself, that it was caused by the steady amount of rain without a drying out period and/or good drainage. ... just a thought.

Great tips on onions MsD…Bunting…look up “boron deficienty” sounds like your potatoes may need more boron in the soil.
