Sept. 15, 2008
Yesterday Rick & I headed to Whistling Gardens (my local tree “fix”) to get some fall deals.
I had a list and stuck to it, miraculously!! Perhaps it was because Rick was with me, haha! :)
I went for a Butterfly Bush (but they had run out) a hydrangea, and a Rose of Sharon. I’ll try growing my Rose of Sharon from seed as well, but for now, I want to have a good chance of growing one successfully. Instead of the Butterfly Bush I bought a… something or other! I’m sure it will be beautiful next year.
For my Carolinian Forest I am adding a Fringe Tree. It supposedly has edible fruit on it but Darren (of Whistling Gardens) said “good luck with that” as the fruit are really small and the birds will eat it before we ever get to it. So, hopefully the tree will feed the birds and they leave my blueberry bushes for me! (this is where Darren chuckled. I don’t think he believes the plan will be successful).
Anyway, we now have one more Carolinian tree in our yard.
We also have a “Mountain Ash” now. The Mountain Ash is also known as the Rowan tree – and it has been six years that I’ve been planning on purchasing one for my yard. My granddaughter, Rowan, turned 6 on Saturday.

Well that Fringe Tree is BEAUTIFUL!!!! What a lovely addtion to your Carolinian “forest”!!! And I like Mountain Ash’s as well. Nice timing on purchasing the Ash!!! Now everytime you gaze at that tree you will think of Rowan. Be a nice story to tell her as she grows … :-)

maybe I’ll get it in the ground tomorrow. It has some cute little orange berries on it now ..no leaves though, I don’t think. And it’s tall.

Those mountain ash grow huge. That is what I took out at the top of my berm.Way too big for that spot.My neighbour has one on the border too that is really huge.I love the look of that tree but boy it sure is messy. Those cute little orange berries love to stick to the soles of my shoes when I cut the grass.(lol)
What colour is your rose of sharon?
The fringe tree looks like a neat tree.I don’t think I have seen this one.

the Mountain Ash will be by the road so the size/mess should be ok.
The rose of sharon – will have to wait and see. Crossing my fingers for a blue/purpley colour.
Fringe Tree: I haven’t seen one either. Going t be fun watching it next year

That Fringe tree is gorgeous. I wish I had seen your posting before I went out yesterday and bought a Witchhazel for our lower garden. The birds eat well here with all the dogwood we have in the bush.
