Our "Edibles" #19: Is It Oregano?

« Part 18: 2008 Harvest Part 19 of Our "Edibles" series Part 20: Planning for 2009 »

I was given this plant and was told that it was thought to be oregano.
So, I’ve come to the experts to confirm

1. Is it oregano?
2. Is it a perennial? and therefore do I harvest and dry the leaves or do I plant it out in the garden for next year.. or both, I guess.

Did you try the crush and sniff test?

I’m going to side with dini on this one.. Seems more like a catnip than oregano. Scratch and sniff.. Oregano is one of those which have a stronger sent so it’s easy to pick out.

From what I recall however, oregano has smooth leaves which are tightly placed.

You’ve got a cat, right? if it’s catnip, crush a leaf and put it under your cats nose.. See what happens.. ;)

None of our cats like catnip though.. :p

It doesn’t look like any kind of oregano I have ever seen!
Catnip is a good guess, another one might be lemon balm?

not lemon balm.

I like the cat test.. I’ll give it a try. The plant has been here for a couple days and the cat hasn’t knocked it off the table yet trying to get at it.. so maybe it’s none of the above.
I’ve done the crush and smell but that didn’t do me any good. lol

cat curled up her nose and tried to ignore it.
The leave is a little thick and fuzzy.
Perhaps it’s just a big weed.

Lot of cats will ignore fresh ’ nip, even while dried sends ‘em squirrelly. Try drying a few of the leaves, then crush, sniff and cat-test again, lol. Definitely does look like a member of the mints , though.
