Let’s review the history of my garden regarding “carrots”.
1. last year’s crop of carrots did not come up.. not a single one!
2. this year we built a “raised bed” and planted three varieties of carrots
3. the dog laid in the carrot bed and I’m sure hauled off most of the seeds in her fur
4. the cat continuously used the carrot bed as its own private kitty litter box and tossed around all the dirt and seedlings leaving us with a barren strip of dirt
5. we have about a dozen carrots (at the most) that happened to have been sown right next to the wood barrier and were left untouched by the dog and the cat
6. Rick planted a row of carrots along the fence line (behind the squash and next to our row of corn)
7. we got about 1/2 or maybe 3/4 of the carrots growing up..
well.. at least we’d have a few carrots.
Yesterday, Rick says to me, “Oh did I tell you about the carrots?”
I close my eyes, shake my head, and say, “now what?”
Well, the farmer sprayed his fence line and we have no carrots.
Maybe NEXT year we’ll get a crop of carrots.

Ours have been miserable little sprigs of nothingness, even with them growing in the garden and not being sprayed.
Just been awful this year.
I’ll give them a try again next year and see if they do anything, else they’re off the “grow list”.

so sorry to hear that MsD…Pesticides leaching and drifting can cause terrible effects. Maybe find a new location for your carrots next year…Its not too late to get some seed in for some short season carrots to use as “baby carrots” in stirfrys and salads. I would suggest Sweet Baby Jane Carrots Veseys.

Face it, Debbie, you’re not destined to grow carrots! At least not this year.

How’s your corn doing (since it was by the carrots)?
Ours stunted and silked way early, only at 3’ tall.. I think we got 4 ears out of 50’ of corn.
Anything else die from the overspray?

I don’t think anything else was affected. Either they didn’t see the carrots there or they were ticked off (which there were) that we tied a tarp rope onto their fence (behind the carrots) and it was payback time. The landowner is an interesting man.
Corn… I think we put in three different varieties, at least two and the one.. haha.. knee high!! The rest is about 4’ I’d say.
re: carrots, I thought about planting more and then keep forgetting. Maybe now I’ll remember. Thanks XO

Ticked over a rope?
Well that’s not very sociable.
Sounds like your corn did a LITTLE better than ours.

well there was controversy with the neighbour over the location of the fence and then he came and checked our property because he didn’t want anything touching his fence posts… didn’t want them rotting out… my mom had tossed some dead flowers in the corner of our property and they were up against the fence. He told her to move them.. which is fine…. just put all the little conversations together and it gets a little “interesting”.
Rick saw him and his wife out there last week and he was pointing at the rope and talking to his wife about it.

haha I remember that pix.. that is the funniest thing. I laughed right out loud at that one.
I wonder what the farmer would think if he saw that by his precious fence… lol

This pictures reminds me of an incident that happened here a few year ago.
The person (happens to be an older lady) who owns the next property was quite upset when we bought this place!
She accused us and the former owner of “stealing” it from her!
She threatened us with “loose bullets” during the hunting season.
She would hide in the woods and “spy” on us! :the reason why we had to cut the trees on the front of the property to stop her from “stalking” me (I did not hear her, but the dog was going crazy on the deck)!
She complained to the Hydro saying that our post were on her property: it happened that the gentleman that came and checked was the same one that did the installation and he told me he thought we were a pain in the hmmmm when he was doing it, but now understood!lol
We had, naturally, made a complain with the police about the threats, and the staking and we were told to document the whole thing and if possible take pictures when she was on our property!
So there I was walking around with my camera in case of…and one afternoon she came and I had my camera.
And I started taking pictures! Well…when she saw that..she ran to her car and left!
A few minutes later she came back and asked why I was taking the pictures and I explained to her the reasons why!
Low and behold, she turned around, bent over and lifted her dress…Yes she mooooned me! And yes I tooks a few pictures!

Well I don’t know how I missed this thread … so much “going on here”!!! LOL!!!! Such stories … funny. Neighbors, you just never know what you are getting into when you move, or they move in. Just keep your fingers crossed till you “know better” ... :-)
I LOVE that bush … hubby had shown me that on LJ a while ago, and we both laughed outloud at that one!!! Priceless!!!!!

definitely been an interesting year for carrots, that’s for sure!
If I find the time, I’ll plant some more seeds and get some for the fall….. I think I still have time, even if we just eat “baby carrots” :)
