« Part 6: Cucumbers Part 7 of My Edibles series Part 8: Tips From My Brother »

July 1, 2008

I had purchased some triple mix for a front flowerbed but changed my mind and decided to add another veggie garden in the backyard.

We simply laid down some cardboard/newspaper, placed some old logs around the edge, filled it with the soil, and then planted sections with seeds for salad ingredients. We have some kale, spinach, lettuce, radishes, and mustard greens.

(I forget when we actually through this together but the seedlings have come up nicely and will soon have some edible produce!)

Smart Deb

I haven’t dug up a garden bed in years.

I also just lay down card board mostly in the Fall where I want a bed then the grass and weed are dead in the Spring

But for my potato bed 2 weeks ago I did just as you

If I do dig up sod, I pile it where I want another bed. But I pile it grass down. Then I have nice soil ready for compost and manure mix in the Spring and ll the grass is dead

I never throw away sod either, if I have no use for it at the time, it goes in the compost

I’m learning! The first flowerbeds i dug.. oh my…. dig, dig, dig… toss, toss, toss.. what a time I had. Then I thought that I could just flip the sod over and use it as a border… and then I thought that I’d just flip it over on top of other sod and make the bed kind of rounded… and now, thanks to GT, I lay down the newspaper/cardboard and cross my fingers.

I’m with you MsDeb … never plan on digging another bed thanks to GT!!!! :-)

Your veggie garden sounds yummie and seemed relatively easy to do.

Like the way you think!!!:-)
I put small rocks to wedge my logs: hubby did put small posts but I found it detracted from the “looks”!!

I just used up my supply of rocks so I’ll have to get thinking of a backup idea.

You can even use pebbles. It will not be long before the logs do settle in and the pebbles are just so they do not roll away: pebbles is what I used in the driveway bed!!
