(Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadian, by the way).
Yesterday as I was weeding my cucumber garden I was surprised and thrilled to see this little guy peeking out at me. He’s not very big yet but I can already taste him.
Now, for many of you, this really isn’t that exciting but you have to remember the history of my cucumbers. First plantings were destroyed by the cat and the dog. These plants were some saggy leftovers at the grocery store – some unwanted plants left for last minute shoppers after they closed up their garden tent.
I didn’t have a lot of hope for these plants: 1) because they were so droopy and 2) because I figured that the cat might just dig them out again. (Which she did but I happened to be watching and was able to re-plant them right then.)
So… this little baby cucumber is a symbol of patience, success, and determination!! Way to go little guy.. way to go :)

The first cuke is always exciting, and I should think it would be a major thrill to see one after all you’ve gone thru to get it!
Our Independence Day festival starts Friday this year, and continues thru Sunday. Where I live has the biggest July 4th fireworks display ( all 3 nights ) in the midwest. Our little town of about 35-40 thousand people will be inundated by tourists, last year’s total over the 3 days was estimated at over 500,000. Needless to say, I will NOT be going anywhere near the festival site this weekend….lol.

GranT, if I walk about 4 blocks, I have an excellent view of all but the “ground effects” fireworks. They are only about 5 miles away, with no really tall buildings between.
