My son and family were home from BC last week and it was a WONDERFUL time!!! It was supposed to rain on Saturday (our bonfire breakfast day) and so we covered the gazebo with a giant tarp which also provided a fairly large awning at the front as well.
(not a great picture but it’s the only one I took at the time)
Once it was up I knew that the future roof would have to create this same effect. We had lots of comments saying that with the big “roof” and with the windows propped open it looked like a cottage at the lake. Woo hoo—that’s the effect we want. This is our cottage-away-from-home-but-still-at-home. In the mornings when Rick and I sit out there we say that we’ve gone north to the cottage and didn’t spend a cent on gas!
So, when we finally get around to doing the roof we are going to have an overhang around the gazebo and then add who-knows-what to make attaching a tarp for the rainy days an easy task. It’s going to be great.
Now, back to my son … ah yes. Gotta love him. When they arrived at the house and after I did my minute of hugging and kissing, he took a look around the property and with a wee bit of sarcasm in his tone said “nice gazebo”. Later in the week he described it as a shack. A shack. My pride and joy and it’s a shack. (Ok so it’s a shack but you have to envision the possibilities!!!)
His response to my hurt feelings was, “but it’s a Mom shack. Is that better?” Yes, indeed! I didn’t know I had a style.. hahaha And he smiled. Priceless!
Sometime when I get a moment I’m going to make a sign for the front of the gazebo: “My Mom Shack”.

Welcome back!!! Missed You!
Sounds like you had a great time!
“My Mom’s Shack”!
I think it is in the eye of the beholder!
And when it is all finished, it is going to be a great story!

Kids … grown or not … ya gotta love em!!! Laughed at his comment on your gazeba … “a mom shack”. I love it!!!! And by all means, get that sign up!!!! :-)
I called our #2 son in Arizona the other day just to chat. I had sent him pics of our little water barrel and since I was outside, I held the phone up so he could hear the water trickling … his response was, “Mom, it sounds like someone is peeing” ... I said, no it sounds like water trickling down from a stream onto some pretty rocks … he laughed and said, “nah, peeing mom” ... soooooo, like I said, grown or not, ya just got to love em!!! hahahahaha!!!!

haha GramT that’s funny. :) Sounds exactly like something my son would say as well.. Funny :)
Yes, E, it is going to be quite the story when it is finished. Almost all the wood is leftovers from other projects; 6 of the windows come from my great=grandfather’s home; the antique door is also from his home; 3 of the windows are old table tops; the rest of the windows are “found” items from a ditch during one of our roadtrips; the whole structure is a rebuild of a purchased canvas gazebo that didn’t survive a month; and (the only thing that impressed my son) it has electricity!
It is already filled with memories, from the rain days of last week with the big tarp on it, to eating breakfast during a blizzard with snow melting off hats and dripping into the eggs on the plates. I love our “cottage up north”. :)
