We had another woodpecker at the feeder today. At first we thought it was a downie woodpecker but the red head wasn’t right, so we looked it up: it was a Hairy Woodpecker. Our visitor wasn’t on the birdfeeder but was on the ground pecking away at dropped morsels.

You have given us a link to some wonderful pics of the Hairy WP, MsDeb. It is difficult to see the difference bt the Hairy and the Downy WP’s. The Hairy is bigger but unless you see the two birds side by side the difference in the size (about 1”+) it can be hard to tell which is bigger. The beak of the Hairy is longer as well, but the most telling detail is the underside of their tails. The underside of the Downy’s tail is white with black bars and the underside of the Hairy’s tail is just white.

I had a pair of turkeys at my feeder.I had bought feed that was too small for the feeder and it poured out onto the ground. It was not wasted as the turkeys finished it all!I wonder if I can keep them here until thanksgiving?lol
