March 12/13
After posting the blog about my recent “attack of the killer rabbits” on my fruit trees, someone mentioned a product available at Walmart that would keep the rabbits away. So I did some online checking and found that Canadian Tire had PlantsKydd, an organic product in a spray bottle.
I’m crossing my fingers that this product will keep the rabbits away for the rest of the spring. I can then fence in my precious trees to protect them for years to come without the added expense of a purchased product.
The reviews were 90% “fantastic” and 10% “disappointed”. There was also a couple of comments about the messiness of the sprays and the caution to wear some old clothes. Apparently the pig blood ingredient is a tad smelly and stains clothes. I didn’t find any problems with the spray going where I didn’t want it.
My trees are now a lovely shade of brown-red. I will check them tomorrow to see if there are any fresh chew marks on the trees. If so, I can return the product. I will continue to check the trees over the next couple of weeks and then when the warm weather arrives I will create little “tree pens” with some chicken wire. This will serve as double duty—the rabbits and I can fill the area with mulch and the fence will keep the chickens out (yippee).
During my spraying outing I checked all of my yard. My goodness those rabbits have been busy. I saw some new buds on some bushes, those that hadn’t been nibbled to the ground. Lots of work to do out there but it never seems like work during the winter season—just itching to get my hands dirty again.

My mother tells me it’s time to plant the paprika seeds indoors, so it’s ready for transplanting end of May, beginning of June – you can get started getting your hands dirty with seedlings.
Good luck with the wabbits.

I have used blood meal and blood & bone meal around plants that I thought might be tempting to the little critters. It seemed to discourage them as well as fertilize the plants. I may find myself using quite a lot this year as with the decline of feral cats in the neighbourhood has meant an increase in rabbits. :( I love to observe the little beggars but don’t like them sampling my flowers. :(

I’m reminded of the sign in the stores: “Lovely to touch; lovely to hold, but if you break it, consider it sold” ....
“Lovely to look at; lovely to hold; but if it nibbles your plants, consider it a pain in the butt that needs to go!”
