This past weekend our neighbours were away so we got to collect their eggs: a dozen on Saturday; 14 on Sunday and 15 on Monday! They are egg-laying machines. And it’s winter time

I was talking with the neighbour this morning and she told me that she had been tossing some mixed birdfeed out for them and she decided to watch to see which seeds they preferred. It was the peanuts.
Now, she buys a bag of peanuts just for the chickens. Since then more eggs are produced AND they are larger in size than what they’d get prior. Huh!

Very interesting.Does she get the peanuts in the shells? And what were the egg shells like; fragile, easy to crack or hard? What breed of chicken does she have?

I wonder if they just like the taste better, or instinctively know or have figured out that they get less hunt for their peck with a peanut since it is surely the largest seed in the mix.

she just said raw… I will assume that they were shelled.
I don’t know what the breed(s) are. sorry.
The egg shells: a few were easy to crack, almost delicate, but for the most part, I’d say “average”.

I would guess that the oil in the peanuts would be a good replacement for insects that they don’t get to eat during the winter months. Thoughts?

My chickens love to eat sunflower seeds. They are constantly raiding any seeds I put out for our wild birds. Our mix doesn’t include peanuts but if it did, I imagine the chickens would enjoy peanuts too.
