« Part 9: Winter "To Do" List Part 10 of 2013 series Part 11: Spring is coming ... »

January 26/12

I couple of years ago I purchased a small fig tree and I’ve been moving it outside for the summer and inside for the winter.

This week the tree started its new growth, after having dropped its leaves last fall.

And, while I’m here: here are some pictures of birds at the feeder outside my window.

Love the red Cardinal Debbie. We don’t have them here as far as I know.

Last wed my wife called to say that we had a flock of Robins in our back yard, Must have been 50 or more all checking out the yard.

The male cardinal is a special winter bird – since you can see him from a distance and he definitely catches your eye!

Robins: ohhh that is lovely.
One winter, Rick and I saw a flock of robins huddled together in a tree in the woods. Neither of us knew that some robins stay here for the winter. Why they would do that is beyond me.

I had a wee little fig start on the tree last year but it fell off. Maybe I’ll get one this year.
My brother said that fresh figs are absolutely delicious.

it is common for the fig to go dormant in our area. Mine lost all its leaves also, but then they came along in the spring. I used to get two crops a year. Those little buds that hang on over the winter became breba figs the next year. Delicious!

We have a fig tree, it puts off very large figs. We get a few the ground squirrels get 90% of them.

Good luck with your little fig tree. I hope it does as well for you as your calemondin.

I have two citrus and a pomegranate that I bring into the house each winter. They are growing so well, I had to re-pot them into larger pots so now they are quite heavy and cumbersome to carry. I want a solarium too! : )

we are on a mission, then!! Now.. how to fund them.

My neighbour has an old pushmower frame that he keeps his now-very-big citrus tree on. 4 wheels, handle. Nice!

This is my solarium after storm Sandie

seven window panes broken, Frame bent and broken. Their going to replace all of the roof glass because the Installer states that after about 6 month old glass starts to fail because of the shock of the hit and also the removing them in order to fix the frame of the room.

A screened in porch was also demolished in the crash. It was an 18” pine tree about 40-50’ tall that tore the root ball out of the ground. The rain softened sandy soil in Delaware.

Okay….. I want a solarium that isn’t near any large trees.

Karson, I hope your solarium is as good as new after it is fixed.

I don’t know how I missed this thread and your wonderful pictures of the cardinals and other birds. Wish you were here as I have so many birds at my feeders these cold, snowy days. And you could take magnificent pictures of them!

We’d have fun, wouldn’t we? —watching the birds… laughing at missed opportunities for a great photo … cause we were laughing about something else.. haha
