« Part 38: At The Birdfeeder - (No Pictures) Part 39 of Our Wildlife Companions series Part 40: At The Birdfeeder - February 24, 2013 »

1/3/13

The birdfeeders continue to provide us with much entertainment. Today, we had a flicker visit us. He (?) first sat on top of the feeder and checked things out—oh how big he was in comparison to the other birds that come to enjoy the feast.

Sadly, no picture for you but the visit did inspire me to take the screens off the windows. So now, all I have to do is camouflage the camera some how so they don’t see an “eye” staring at them.

I did get these pictures of one of the female cardinals that visits.
(Oh and on a side note, my Mom stopped by today and she had the pleasure of seeing the red-headed woodpecker at the feeder!! Next year I have to raise up that feeder so I can see the base of it from where I sit. I missed his visit today.)

Back to the cardinals…

In this first picture, she is a bit annoyed with me because I took away her perch. She much preferred clinging to the window screen over sitting on the ledge.)

Extraordinary pictures Debbie. So you required a little motivation to take the screens off the window! Now we can expect to get more pictures of birds visiting your bird feeders. Your mom was very lucky to see the red headed woodpecker. You can listen to the sweet call of the Northern Cardinal (male I suppose) on the link http://www.almanac.com/content/bird-sounds-northern-cardinal

Great shots Ms Deb.
The cardinals are annoyed here too because it is -25C and snowing.

We don’t see too many cardinals in the western states, if at all, so thanks for the pictures! I do have a pair of flickers that frequent my yard, however – tapping on the trees or digging for ants at the bases of the pear trees, where there are rotting pears buried under the alyssum.

You have not disappointed me, MsDeb. How beautifully you have caught this lovely bird. And how amusing! I can’t help but read her expressions as trying to have a conversation with you. The female cardinal is definitely one classy bird!

Thanks
And yes, she’s had lots to say!!! She did NOT like the fact that I’d removed her screen.
I finally had to pull the blind down to stop her from crashing into the window. Tapping I can handle but she was flying at it with full force!

If I remember correctly the cardinals have a variety of calls, each quite unique.
