Yes, indeed – the garden is in. It’s not completely finished (that will be done tomorrow) but the majority is done. Woo hoo.. Finally.

That’s it.. short and sweet—and no pictures. We’re off to bonfire night at my brothers. See you tomorrow!!

Pics of bonfire night might be fun.. ;)

We just finished planting our garden a few days ago.. Ended up having to replant 2 50’ rows. Darn soggy weather before rotted the seeds.

Hmmmm.. Bonfire.. Reminds me of camp when I was young..er… We’d make mountain pies.. Looooove those..

Wife thinks I’m nuts when I talk about mountain pies.. I even got an iron to bring down here.. Plan on using it this summer..

She also thought I was nuts when I went on a pizzelles rant and picked up an iron just for that.. Till she tried them.. Now she loves them..

Now.. If I can only sneak in fried mush.

Bit far fetched huh.. I even tried renaming it and called it by the proper “Polenta”, but darnit, one of her friends tipped her off that it was mush.

This weekend wore me out. I was SO tired yesterday i could barely move – that is until I got in the pool for 1/2 hour!! Yes, indeed, I was in our pool yesterday. 68F at the top of the pool, probably 60F at the bottom. I didn’t swim; just waded around (almost chest high water). It perked me right up.

Ok.. so here’s what we have in the garden:
  • peas. 3 rows plus those at our pool fence; each double sowed about 3 weeks apart.
  • beans, (climbing at the pool and bush in the garden)
  • spanish onions
  • small plots of lettuce, kale, mustard, radishes, spinach, and cilantro
  • asparagus (planted a couple of years ago)
  • beets
  • chick peas (never planted these before)
  • tomatoes (beefsteak, roma, another smaller type and then some wee little cherry tomatoes)
  • carrots and parsnips
  • peppers (several varieties)
  • cucumbers
  • sweet corn (two varieties) and we are going to put some beans in front of the corn perhaps today
  • watermelon (thanks to our seed trade)
  • pie pumpkins
  • acorn squash
  • long-necked gourds which will hopefully hang from our pool fence
  • and around our well cover I planted: cyprus ivy (thanks to our seed exchange), quinoa grain, amaranth, dill and…. hmmm barley I think
  • 6 bushes of blueberries in the front lawn, forming a border for a path. Oh I hope we get blueberries!!!

and that’s it for my edibles. (besides the apple tree, pear tree, cherry tree (with frozen flowers, darn), nannyberry, red currants, strawberries, and raspberries).

WOW … you have been busy. Nice selection in your garden MsDeb. Gonna be some good eating this summer and through the coming year.

Dip in the pool would have indeed felt good yesterday. Geesh, what is up today … cool here, is it cool your way?? Got any “ice” forming on that pool water … LOL!!!! It is really quite brisk here, and the wind has been howling all morning.

Carrots… last year none of our carrots came up and this year I’m not hopeful either. Why you ask? Well, Gabby (the neighbour’s dog) decided that the plot of land where I planted the carrot seeds was THE best place to take her siestas and, now, I’m sure that 90% of the carrot seeds are in her fur. Maybe by fall she’ll be wearing a good crop of carrots.

The other 10% that might have survived has been scooted and rooted several times by Jasmine, my daughter/son-in-law’s cat, after she found the lovely earth and decided that this was her very own kitty litter.

Maybe next year we’ll have carrots!

this morning was a glorious morning, sitting in the gazebo with all of the 1000 mosquitoes on the outside of the screens!!

and then there was poor Gabby … she had 1000 mosquitoes around her, dozens on her face alone. It was really sad to watch her (through the screen) as she tried to find a good place to lay down.

Well, she did find a spot that she thought was good—right on top of my cucumbers and nasturtiums! When we finally got her to move, she walked away with a nasturtium hanging from her fur and where the cucumbers used to be is a big hole.

So I’ve now lost my carrots, my nasturtiums, and my cucumbers.

Get yourself a big bag of cayenne pepper MsD. Won’t hurt them but it sure will make them think twice about lying in your gardens.

another good idea

for the cucumbers I thought they were safe.. lots of empty dirt around the centre of the circle where the flowers/cukes were planted…
I guess I didn’t take into consideration the size of Gabby… she’s a small horse.

Have you thought of maybe setting up an area just for her, out of the way and nicely shaded? Toss out an outdoor furniture pad.. Lay down a few chews for her. -shrugs-

It’s either that, or contain your garden area better.

And if you spray the pad with insect repellent, it might even give her some relief from the flies and skeeters.

WHAT I CAN`T GET YET IS THE LONG ABBREVIATIONS LIKE GRANDMA T USES ,GIVE IT TIME .
I HAVE JUST GOT HOLD OF AN AMERICAN BOOK BY JERRY BAKER FOR GROWING PRIZE VEGETABLES WHICH SEEMS TO BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF A “GRANDMA PUTT”, IF I MADE UP ALL THE POTIONS SPRAYS AND TEAS MY GREENHOUSE WOULD BE LIKE A CHEMISTS SHOP (DRUG STORE ) IT IS A STRANGE BOOK BUT IT IS INTERESTING .

she has her own spot… under the tree in front of the house… in my little garden behind the house… under the pine tree…. on the path beside the gazebo…. in the neighbour’s flower garden…. and under the cedar trees.

She’s picked them all… goes where she wants; plops down where she wants.
I’ve put rocks where I don’t want her to be… just thought the cukes were safe. Didn’t out think her on that one! :)

She leaves the property if you bring out flea powder or spray, giving you a really nasty look on her way out. It was much easier when I didn’t have flower beds or a garden :)

GramT: Gabby really listens well; she just has a short memory! lol.
She likes to be close to us when we are outside so I guess that is why she moves around and ends up in the wrong places at times (ex. the cucumbers which are outside the gazebo). Anyway, I’ll know for next time: put stakes in the ground so she’ll stay out.
