May 13, 2008
Today was my sister-in-law’s and my monthly road trip. We started at Canning Perennials and then went to a smaller centre in Muir, followed by the big Oxford Insta-Shade, lunch, and then one of Courtland’s antique store and finally Coyles. Phew. What a day!
I have an order in at Canning Perennials but it wasn’t ready yet so I just browsed. Yup.. browsed. Can you believe it? Came away with a Northern Azalea Golden Lights bush that smells DELICIOUS, several pots of “steppable” groundcover plants (Rupturewort, Brass Buttons, Orange-scented Thyme), and a Multi-blue Clematis (just for my GT friends who have convinced me to try again).
At the smaller garden centre I bought a ”hardy ice plant” which is gorgeous and a ”Hellebores”.
At the Oxford Centre I bought some rosemary and some floating plants for the pond (yippee—finally!!!) – and when i got home I found that I got 2 snails as a bonus.
At Coyles I bought a couple wrought-iron decor pieces at a discount price and a double-sided clock that I have to decide how to prepare for the outdoors.
Now, I have to plant them. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow so that will be perfect!! Off to shovel :)

I just hope they survive…. haven’t had much luck with a clematis yet. (ok.. NO luck)
here is the “Petasites frigidus palmatus”
and the “Hardy Ice Plant”
The leaves of the Hardy Ice Plant are a gorgeous green and are quite thick. The contrasting colour of the flower is stunning.

Not sure HOW you ever picked from the pictures of the Cannes Perennials nursery!!! But you have got some real beauties, that is for sure. That Azalea and Clematis are breathtaking. WOW!!! Is your Hardy Ice Plant a succulent?? What a pretty little plant … love the leaves and flowers.
Great choices MsDeb … those gardens of yours are filling up, and beautifully I might add. :-)

the shopping was difficult indeed, especially since I already had an order with them. There were SO many gorgeous plants to choose from. I tried to be good and not buy much. Sigh.
Here’s some information that I found on the Ice Plant
Maybe I should have purchased more of them – oh wait—I do have to go back to pick up my order in a couple of weeks! :D :D :D

Yah, it does sound like you found a real little treasure there. Propagating (sp???) it doesn’t seem too difficult either. Hmmmmmm, I don’t know, if I were you I might have to get at least one more when you go back for your order … I mean after all it does need a “cousin” to keep it company. :-)

MsD all that clematis of yours wants is for you to make sure her feet are nice and cool. When planting, give her a friend that is a ground covering type plant and she will be so happy!!
Once more, you guys in the western part of Ontario have such great nurseries!!Here even HD or WM do not seem to carry what you have!!
Yes, this is me being “jealous”!
And your pond is really growing beautifully!

yah, warming up would be good. We seem to be getting a warm day, then rain the next … so on and so on. At least the temperature has been staying in the low 60’s (F). It is like if you don’t get outside on the one sunny day, you have missed it.

New plants are lookin’ really good MsD. That clematis looks like it has a really good start to it.Like Eklectic said.Keep its feet cool.(LOL) You can also just put a flat rock over the roots.Works great too.I always do this just in case I plant something there and it dies.

the clematis went in the ground today. Lots of mulch on top and a rock on the south side of the plant to keep its feet cool. Now I just wait to see if it is “3 for 3” or “3rd time is a charm”.

What gorgeous plants! I was at Canning several years ago and was not impressed but I will have to go back and have a second look.Maybe we can make it the same day.
And your pictures should be entered in a contest; especially the last one. Was the antique store called Tante somthing?
Gardenland is having a sale now also. Just too much!!

Hi MsD I was just on a site that I just found called theseedsite. It is from the UK. ON it I found your ice plant. It is one of those plants that use to have a different name. It use to be known as Mesembryanthemum. ( Is a rose by any other name still a rose???)
