Our Pond #2: Refurbished Pond

« Part 1: From a speck of water to... Part 2 of Our Pond series Part 3: New Fish and... »

April 20, 2008

On our list of garden updates this year was making the pond deep enough so that our fish could stay in it for the winter.

Here is where we started this morning:
Yes, that’s the neighbour’s dog, Gabby, laying in one of the two little “pond” holes from last year. Not quite sure how she fit into it but she loves being cool and I guess the hole did it for her.

We then spent the day digging.. and digging.. and digging.. One area is almost 4’ deep, I guess and then we have two small levels up from it for the plants to sit on and the rocks.

We then took the mini pond (that fit in the hole Gabby was sleeping in) and used it as a source for a waterfall. We took (or I should say Rick took) the two little fountain pumps and jimmied them together to pump water into the top tub and then it cascades into the big pond.

I planted irises and rhubarb around the edge and the rest will have to wait until I have some energy again!

Hopefully by the end of the week the water will be warmed up enough to put the fish in.

That looks just great Deb.
I would hold off on the fish for a few days… <vbg>
Actually if you dig it deep enough you can leave the in.

thanks everyone (and Karla – I can’t wait til you see it as well… I’m almost on the countdown.. ok. I just the jittery excitement feeling.. come on June!!!)

Bob.. the main hole is about 4’ deep so the fish “should” survive the winter… so, they will be going to their new home sometime this week (probably this afternoon.. I’m not big on waiting)

Plants: if I knew the names.. haha.
we have a spiky plant that has stripes up the shafts .. zebra something perhaps? .. and a Blue Flag (I think). It never flowered last year but it survived the winter…. and we have a hmmm.. no idea but something is growing.

In the waterfall bucket we have some tall grasses of some sort, they already had some tiny little flowers and we have a big purple leafed something .. and some long annoying strands stuff but it should work well for the “filtering” goal in the waterfall bucket.

We will then have some floating plants to help with the water filtration.

Around the outside I want to get some groundcover evergreen bushes and then put in more rhubarb as my “exotic aquatic” plant haha.

I see your pond is really coming along I guess you will be happy to get your fish in. Are you going to put in water plants? I generally keep one waterlily and a lot of oxygenating plants in mine, it also helps to keep my water clear when the plants cover the pond the blue herring don’t see the fish.

isn’t Gabby beautiful? I’m not a dog lover but she has my heart. I’m glad she comes to visit so often – of course I might not say that when she decides to use the pond as her way to cool off in the summer.

Fish are in and they are loving it.

There is a gold fish and another fish twice its size that looks like a koi but isn’t. For the past year the goldfish has followed the “koi” wherever it has went. It’s like ”hey Spike, what are we going to do today Spike, huh, huh?

After the transition time into the pond I opened up the bucket and the goldfish was half way around the pond and back again before the koi was out of the bucket!!! Since then the koi has followed the goldfish everywhere… now it’s the koi saying ”so what are we going to do today, Spike? Huh? Huh?” Total behaviour change. Fascinating!!

Oh and they love their deep hole… if a shadow goes onto the water they dive for cover. They are so much fun to watch.

oh yes GramT… big smile.

Most mornings, Rick and I get up sitting “pond side” by 5:30 am.. and sit there, off and on, until Rick leaves for work at 7:30.
We then sit there again in the evening.. and I take my breaks there throughout the day.

When we get a chilly morning or sometimes “just because” Rick will light a fire in the firepit and we huddle by the fire and listen to our “waterfall”.
This is our “camping” routine right in our own backyard!

the cats spend a lot of time trying to find the best rock to stand on while getting a drink.
Our two have ended up standing on the wood and drinking out of the top little fountain pond..

an update to the pond

I worked on this last week, adding more rocks around the outside as well as some iris’, bleeding hearts, and rhubarb.
I also have some snippets of ground cover (can’t remember the name) that will hopefully find its away amongst the rocks.
Oh and the little white fence is protecting my Quinoa seeds. I planted them and then Gabby, the neighbour’s dog, decided that that particular spot was the best place in town to lay! The goal for these grains is for it to look like grasses beside the pond.
