« Part 30: Drying Herbs & Flowers Part 31 of Our Flower Gardens series Part 32: Lost in the Wild! »

June 26/09

Yesterday, we greeted more guesta! Unfortunately, during our “potentially tornado” weather, a dove and her babies were blown to the ground.

Rick found the Mom and her babes laying in the middle of the lawn, her wings outstretched to protect her little ones. In an effort to protect them from predators, he made a quick box nest and put some straw in it. As he went to pick up the babies and put them in it, the mother bird played the broken wing trick to try and distract him.

Rick placed the babies in the nest and then in the pine tree that was next to where they were found. Soon after we saw momma bird nestled into the makeshift next caring for her wee ones.

Wow you really got hit with that storm. We had hot,hot sun all day yesterday.Friends of ours from Oshawa came down last night and they got pretty much what you did and I’m only an hour east from there and we got nothing.Looks kinda cloudy out right now and it spit for a couple of minutes an hour ago but so far nothing like a good rain.Ground is dry again already.

Oh MsDeb, it took my breath away to see those sweet little birds. Dove mamas build such a flimsy nest. Sometimes just a few sticks in the crotch of a couple branches. They often get blown out of their tree. You and Rick are such heros! Isn’t great to see the mama find her babies and take up the job right where she left off. She should be very greatful for kind-hearted people like you.

Great rescue! They are such gentle creatures. And their soft, mournful coo is comforting to hear! We got a lot of rain yesterday-it rained heavily for less than an hour or so it seemed. The rain poured down in sheets and the wind blew it in all directions! Couldn’t believe when I went outside after the storm to hang some clothes that it had rained about 2 inches! Saw on the new the damage caused by a small tornado-it was the width of a road and ripped apart homes and garages and barns and trees! Thankfully no one was hurt. The beauty of a storm is something I enjoy, but not its wrath! Hope everyone else is okay. Today is hot already and humidex of 33 too. Keep cool, everyone.

It is a neat feeling when you can help Mother Nature out. Rick has shown that he has some maternal instincts as well. ;)
