Yes, indeed, it is getting closer to being completed!
More than 4 years ago we began with something like this, as sold by Canadian Tire?
The year after the frame was destroyed (within a month of purchase, due to high winds) our journey began for a replacement gazebo. First step: we built a deck floor and built a wooden frame on which we hung the screens, walls, and roof.
The next year, the roof tore to shreds and we put up a tarp roof.
That hung on for a while but the winter winds wreaked havoc on the walls…
... and we had to replace them, one wall at a time, with wood. All the windows are found treasures – some were found in a ditch and a couple are old glass table tops.
It was at this point that my son named the structure “a shanty”. ...
...
The following year, we got tired of having to fix the tarps for every rain, wind, or snow storm and so that was replaced with a wooden roof, again covered with tarps.
This spring we added a metal roof—yippee—no more tarps!
And now… here we are at one step closer to being finished.
The past three days, Rick spent much of his time putting old barnboards on the outside. These boards are from my great-grandfather’s barn, which makes it very special.
We still have to paint the 2×4’s and the underside of the roof that overhangs the edges.
And now, I wait to hear what my son will call it now!

Enchanting Palce of Dreams!
I love the exagerated overhangs . Reminds me of kindler, gentler times.
That big circluar window reminds me of a “porta”l.

It is an interesting building, that’s for sure….. windows and wood have witnessed many things in their lives!

It’s not a shanty. I wouldn’t call it a gazebo any more either.
A shed hardly seems fitting. I’ll have to think about it :D

It looks like the club house I wish I had as a boy. Certainly come a long way from a store bought canopy. Pretty Spiffy.

Can we call it Gertie? I think she needs a real name and not just “shed” or “cabin”.
Although I am leaning towards “cabin” or “The Summer House”. Yes it must be capitalized and said with a snooty air.

I call it “Enchanted.”
Very nice Debbie. Your great- grandfather would be proud. Unless you screwed up his barn real good.

If you became a midwife, and used it as a place of work, you could call it a “Birth-ah”.
Sorry, one of those days at work and the Aunt Gertie comment got me on a roll.

Bertha (Birth-ah) is my grandmother’s name! Another family tree reference. Pretty cool.
“The Club House” it is then :)
That sure is a long way from “shanty” :)
Good thing I didn’t finish that sign that said, “Joey’s Shanty” ;)
We could call it “Joey’s Clubhouse”—sounds like that is about 25 years too late in the making but better late than never, I guess haha
Now if I could just get you home for a visit …..

So MrJoeP, you are MsDeb’s BC son, eh? Welcome to GT. Bet you’ve heard all about the fun we have here. I have a son in BC too. He and his family live in Mission.
MsDeb, I think ‘The Clubhouse’ sounds perfect. I like the name Joey’s Clubhouse too…...........you know my younger son’s name is Joe too. 8^)

this discussion has turned into a lot of coincidences (the reference to my Aunt Gertie and my Grandmother Bertha. )

July 22/09
inside the “cottage” we have a couple birdhouses hanging. They were cheap ones I picked up at a store – one is a burger stand and one is a golf clubhouse. They are cute but not for outside, I don’t think. They’d just fade and fall apart.
Anyway, this morning, I went out to sit in the cottage, and then something caught my attention – there was a wren coming out of the burger stand birdhouse. He flew onto something else and looked at me (how dare I enter his domain!) and then he flew into the corner. I thought that he had become trapped in the cottage when someone left the door open. When I looked in the corner I found that one of the boards had fallen out during our last renovations, leaving a little gap to the outdoors.
While I was sitting there, he and his partner (or she and her partner) flew inside a couple of times but left just as quickly.
What an experience! Of course, at one point, last month, while trying to decide what to call our new structure it was joking called “an extreme birdhouse”. I guess the joke is now on us because at the moment that is exactly what it is!

What a wonderfully unique structure you have created. The best things in life take lots of time, energy and creativity to create. I can see all those things going into such a beautifully and thoughtfully constructed product. An inspiration!

I went out to the cottage this morning – with my camera – and waited to get a picture of our little house guest, the wren.

Rick decided to peek inside the house (which was now a comfy nest) and as he was peeking in, somehow the bird came out and flew outside.
The little wren was not happy at the interruption and sat on the sunflower waiting for us to leave.
Rick left and I sat quietly inside waiting. I was hoping that the bird couldn’t count. Sure enough within a minute the little bird reappeared and climbed into his well-protected home.
