As we build our personal retreat in the backyard, we seem to just go with the moment and build/add whatever feels right.
For example, last summer my son and his family moved from Ontario across the country to British Columbia. They left behind a small fountain that they had in their backyard. “Sure, I’ll take it”, I said, wanting a fountain but having no idea where it would go in our acre piece of land.
This spring we decided that we would put it in the ground: just make a decision and do it. Glancing around the yard at a number of possible locations I noticed the little sandbox (a turtle pool dug into the ground and filled with sand) that we wouldn’t be needing for a while since my only grand-daughter now lived thousands of miles away.
So, we pulled up the sandbox and put the fountain container in its spot. Hmmm It needed to be dug a little deeper.
Well, since we are digging, why don’t we make it a bigger hole and make a little pond around the fountain. Nice!
(Here is a little video I had made back in May, to show my son and his family.. it’s not a fancy video..sad, really.. but it gets the job done)
http://blip.tv/file/get/MsDebbieP-ThePond331.mov
Then came: “Well, since we have it this big, why don’t we add fish to it??” Really nice.
And then: What if… we took the fountain back out and dug it into the ground beside the pond, giving the fish more room and making the pond area seem bigger. Brilliant.
Hmm poor little fishies.. they need to have a deeper place to swim – and if we want them to survive the winter we need to make the hole at least 3 feet deep….
And so our little fountain project has turned into quite a big project!
This is where we stand at the moment: the idea, the “need”, and no real plans.
Our next step will be to dig the hole for the new pond and then connect it to the current one.
We will then have to build a bridge because it is all located just off our deck and right in the way of two paths.
It’s going to be exciting. No, it IS exciting!!
We have no idea what we are doing (as you can see) and so will be needing your help as we dig our way out of this, I mean into this, I mean through this,.. hehehe

I’m glad our little fountain could be put to such good use. So what’s the status of your pond?

the pond is now “un-pond-ed”.
The fish our inside in a large rubbermaid container. (Couldn’t afford a fishtank.) I did buy them a filter though and along with some of the floating plants I hope they remain healthy all winter.
Some of the large plants are also inside, sitting in your fountain container. They look healthy so far. (the main plant mass must have weighed 100 pounds – it took everything I had to roll it out of the pond and into the container.)
And outside, there are 2 big holes. Hopefully we will create a 4’ deep pond next spring so the fish can remain outside all year.

I’ll be interested in seeing how the pond turns out. We would like to put one in sometime as well but we don’t have money for anything fancy. My landlady’s mother whom I do work for has three ponds with goldfish and I noticed there were no pumps or moving water so I asked her about them and she said the fish would do just fine which surprised me although I know goldfish are a tough breed. Her ponds are fairly shallow and so far they seem to be doing ok. Let us know how things turn out.

HI DEBBIE IS YOUR CLOTHES LINE TOO HIGH ? OR ARE YOU VERTICALLY CHALLENGED ?, I THOUGHT THE STEPS WERE WHERE YOU MOUNTED YOUR HORSE.
LOVELY COMMENTRY AND THE SOUND OF RUNNING WATER MAKES ME WANT TO GO FOR A PEE BUT NO PICTURE BUT I IMAGINED A LOT. I DID GET A MESSAGE THE FREE VERSION OF NERO HAS EXPIRED THIS MAY BE THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM . LOVELY TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTARY BUT I COULD DO WITHOUT THE RUNNING WATER SOUND HAVING JUST RETURNED FROM MY LOCAL HOSTELRY .
REGARDS MIKE

clothesline is high AND I’m vertically challenged :)
running water – I think that is how Mother’s train their little boys to go pee and thus the “running water” problem in later years :)

thanks :)
it looks so different this year already … but I do like the quaint little pond that it was in its beginnings. Right now it is still waiting for plants. But I can be patient! Really!! Honest~
