I was looking for something to do the other day when I noticed this
This great lady(gotta be a she, it’s got seeds) overgrown with grass and surrounded by her pups.
Well I put on the gloves, and went to weeding. Welders gloves are a necessity, these are spikey devils. After about three hours of pulling, and cutting, I pronounced her done.I even took one of the offsets to the orphanarium. When I showed the boss, she just shook her head, and said, nice job, but the whole thing’s got to come down…it’s in the way of some improvements scheduled for next month. Well! I sharpened up my knives, and shovel and went to cutting. This is what I left….for now.
I’ll have to take her down in a couple of weeks, but I saw no reason that she couldn’t stand proud for a few more days. I will try to relocate her, but a transplant of this scale is iffy at best.
But here’s the real score.

They’re covered in mealybug right now so they’re in quarantine, but a little rubbing alcohol, and marigold tea ought to clear all that up
Not all of our discards are salvageable…I do have to discard a lot of nice stuff, just no place to put it. Here’s a shot of some of our rejects…
Aloe vera in flower, it was encroaching a water valve, and a bird of paradise that had nested on the roof of one of our units.
Oh, and a shot of part of my multi-layered pest control system

very interesting!!
It made me smile, reading about the honour and respect shown to the tree, letting her stay a few more days.

Cycads are one of the oldest plant forms on Earth…that in itself merits some respect. That and they’re just so darned cuddly :D

Yeah, p’raps cuddly is stretching it…the two to three inch spies that gather between the fronds make cleanup very…um, challenging. My two ash trees rain leaves year round, and they curl up in the fronds making removal a hands on thing. with welding gloves 8-0

oh isn’t that wonderful … reminds me of the English Chestnut shells, I need steel-toed shoes to clean up the fallen warriors.

I know I’m late to the party, but I had to say how I loved this post! To see the before, during, and after pics really make an impression.

The after pics are gonna be a bummer. I’ve still got to cut her down…that’s scheduled for this coming week, or the week after, latest. I’ve never attempted a relocation this big. Digging it out is not possible, she sits astride a natural gas pipe. I am NOT looking forward to this…
