Where do all the Lady Bugs go.

Blog entry by Karson posted 319 days ago 415 reads 0 times favorited 16 comments Add to Favorites

Where or where do all the lady bugs go in the winter. They are one of the few that hibernate. I’ve seen the back of my house covered with ladybugs and they find ways to get into the house. I’ve always wondered how.

Just after the new year my son David and I went to one of the State parks in our area of Delaware. It’s called Cape Henlopen. They have some large towers that are Silent Sentry’s from the WW2. They were observation towers that were built along the coast.

The were used for observation and triangulation between two towers so that they could figure out where to fire the coast protection guns. At this fort the guns could shoot for about 25 miles. Which was far enough to shoot to New Jersey. The 360 deg view from the top

Some of the towers have been demolished. most have the openings bricked over to keep vandals and sightseers out. This tower has been restored as an observation tower. New stairs and a fence on the top to keep people from falling over the edge. I assume the soldiers were not so lucky.

As Dave and I were making our way to the top you see some strange things on the walls.

They were in all of the strange places to sit out the winter.

If you go to this site at the University of Kentucky you can see pictures of Ladybugs and some of the different species. This picture may have at least three of the species identified.

Final picture at the edge of the wire protecting you as you climb up the stairs.

When I was taking down the tarps of the gazebo I found ladybugs snuggled into the folds.

Never really thought about bugs “hypernating” ... but it makes sense with the Lady Bugs. Growing up they were the ONLY bugs that I wouldn’t; scream in terror and bolt from. Maybe it was cuz they were pretty or called Lady Bugs.

My brother used to chase me around our yard with worms. And to be honest when I first started gardening would totally freak when I saw one (what gardening gloves are for!) ... I actually look for them now cuz I know they represent good rich soil. Silly, but I have to re-bury them to be sure they don’t “dry up”.

Supposedly, you can take some of these guys and freeze ‘em yourself in the freezer. Then thaw them out in the spring.

I’ve been put on notice that I’m not allowed to perform any such biological experiments in our freezer.

Sheesh, sounds like I’m at home. Wait, I am at home.

I mean, geez, I’d use a zip-loc back to house ‘em. Not like I’d throw them en masse into the freezer with the ice cubes… :)

I think Scott puts his wood in the freezer to get rid of the bugs.. Scott?? Did I remember that correctly? And do you put the wood in bags?

I’m betting he has his own freezer in the woodshop…or sleeps on the couch.

I say bag up the Lady Bugs and lets see.

As long as it is not my house it should be a great idea.

I walk the woods in the winter and turn over logs and leaves “just to see”. I find the most amazing things in the dead of winter. Quite an adventure if you dare. I found a red and black salamander, stink bugs galore, a daddy long leg spider and sprouts of all kinds of plants. Pretty fun, but hey I am a tomboy. I can’t get my glamour girl 4 year old to enjoy it yet though. Don’t figure.

Ever think of a clear bug jar (holes poked in the lid of course) for your daughter? We used Mason Canning Jars. You can add leaves and other stuff too … She might think that is “cool” ...

My daughter is pretty funny. She loves to carry around frogs she gives names to but won’t bother with the bugs. I even got her to make a worm farm in a soda jar once. Another story is using the bug net in the pond to catch baby bluegill and baby bass. she kept them alive in the house in a fishtank for a month until one ate the other and I made her let the last one go.

I think she will get into it sooner or later.

Oh yah, if she is doing all that … bugs are just a “matter of time”! :-)
