Showing off my Christmas cactus

Every year I put many of my house plants outside for the summer and bring them in come fall. My Christmas cactus always buds up as the days get shorter and cooler. If I bring it inside too soon many of the buds stop developing and drop off. This year, I left it until the last minute and then put it in my unheated garage for a couple weeks. Last week I finally brought it into the house, still putting it in an unused room in the house that just has natural light (no lights in the evening). Two days ago I brought it into the livingroom———wanted to share it with you————————-

This will probably evoke memories of being a child and visiting grandma’s house. Every grandma had a large Christmas cactus in the formal livingroom in a wicker stand. This is what I think of every time I look at my cactus in flower.

Hope you enjoyed the little memory. )

The cooler weather is making it alittle easier to get into the gardens and start cleaning up. Because I have so many iris, I have to start cutting the tops and cleaning the plants in order to keep them healthy and discourage grubs. It’s a good time to pull out dead and dying foliage too. I try to do some transplanting while I’m at it.———-But mostly I spend alot of my time just admiring the flowers that are still going strong.

I have been away for the last couple weeks, and low and behold, this is what finally started blooming while I was away. I planted the seeds late(I always do) and I wondered if I would see them bloom. You’d think I’d learn to get them in the ground earlier as ‘Heavenly Blue’ is one of my favorite flowers. Such a true blue colour for the garden.

A week camping at Pinery Provincial Park

I spent last week with a friend at PPP. She has been in the Host/Hostess program for about 10 years. She started out camping in a tent but in recent years her health is not as good and getting up and down out of a tent has changed her style of camping. I have a small camper that I lend her to keep her off the ground and drier if it rains. But this year rain was not a problem, and although it got cool acouple nights, every day was sunning and bright. We had a good time!

This is my friend, Pat, who welcomes campers.

We had some visitors one day, but they were young and didn’t bother us.

Of course the beach at the Pinery is a very popular area.

This is a typical picture of the Pinery and obviously the reason for the name of the park.

The sunsets over Lake Huron are world famous and the Pinery offers a great place from which to take these pictures. We were treated to a show from some youngsters with their kites. It was so windy they only had to hold the kite up and the wind caught it and took it up into the sky. It made for a very special picture.

The abundant rain-fall this year brought all the wild flowers to the best I’ve ever seen them.

And of course, the Monarchs were everywhere———

As were many other butterflies——

I would have loved to show you some pictures of the many birds that visit the Pinery, but the foliage was so thick this year and I was too lazy to hunt them.
Hope you enjoyed this visit to the Pinery!

In my last blog someone suggested some pics showing the different views of my garden as opposed to individual flowers, so here we go———————————->

This picture is of my front yard and the gardens across the front of the deck.

A closer look at the flowers.

When you come off the front deck and walk through the garden to the east, you walk through the arbor.

Up the east side of the house is a butterfly bush that hides the AC.

Then you have a view into my backyard.
The east side————————————————————- and the west corner, where the pond is:

A closer look at the pond———————————————————-and some of it’s inhabitants—-

I have another deck on the back of the house, with BBQ for eating out——-

That leaves the west side of the house, the hibiscus is just starting to bloom—

And a few random shots thoughout the gardens:

Well that’s it, now you have some idea of how I garden. Not very orderly. Actually with hardly any rhyme or reason. In the spring, after the daffs and tulips, my gardens are full of blooming iris. Every few weeks the picture changes so it’s hard to decide just when to take ‘a typical’ picture. These shots were taken within the last week. Hope you enjoyed.
