I often visit a bird-watching site on the internet. The folks there talked about how much grape jelly the orioles were eating at their feeding stations. So I decided to try it here last year. As far as I could tell no oriole seemed interested. But this year what a different story! The orioles have gone through 3 jars of Grape jelly so far, dished out in portions of 3 tablespoons morning and night. When they come to the dish the jelly is suppose to be in, if it’s empty, what a fuss. But do you think they will sit still so I can get a picture – - -no way. The second they see movement, off they go. So with the upmost sneakiness I finally managed acouple picutes- – - not good pictures, but pictures none the less.
First try, from the kitchen table, where I hid behind a vase of flowers. Unfortunately also through the screen door.
The next 2 pics, I was outside, but clear across the backyard, so still not the best pics.

WOW!! Great pictures!! I love the bent neck in the second picture. And the flower to the right of it is beautiful.
I know I have some around but they never ever came to the feeder! I will definitely try you jam jelly trick!
They are great looking birds! Thanks for sharing Iris!

Terrific pic
WE don’t have this beautiful bird
I have friends in Ont , a bird photgrapher, she says they love oranges. Just peel and cut the orange up. They sit by the hour as this bird sucks the life out of an orange

I think the pics are fine! We only see them briefly here so I’ll have to put out some of my grape jelly to encourage them to visit more often. Our local baseball team is named for those beauties: The Baltimore Orioles. :-)

Great photos for these camera-shy birds! They would have to fight me for the grape jelly-it is great on rye bread!

I also have an orange station for them. It was hard to keep oranges on it bc both the orioles and finches kept them cleaned out. But since I put out the grape jelly, the orioles don’t go to either the oranges or the sugar water.
Thanks for looking at my orioles and for the appreciative remarks.

I got a few more pictures of the orioles. This time juveniles. They started coming with the parents first but now seem to think this is their personal feeding station. They are much more approachable and continued to eat while I took these pictures.——from inside the kitchen door.
Sorry you can only see the rump of the one on the left….................................................................

Eklectic, I just recently read that while orioles like oranges, they tend to stop coming to them after they have been back in our area for a month or so. I find the finches still come to them but haven’t seen an oriole go to the oranges, especially since they found the grape jelly. So don’t give up on the orioles completely. Feed the finches now and try for the orioles again next spring. :-)
