Part 1: First Color ...
It has been such fun seeing everyone’s gardens as plants begin to bloom. So thought I might share some pictures of what is just beginning to bloom in my gardens as well. Dwarf Iris with it’s first bloom. It sits in my front yard garden. First year for growing the dwarf’s. This is my Rudbeckia Totos. I have a Rudbeckia Prairie Sun planted in the middle of the Totos. With the cold weather a while back, I thought I might loose these little guys. But despite the bit of lea...
Part 2: My How We Have Grown ...
Despite all the ups and downs with our weather, my baskets and containers are doing just great. Most have at least doubled in size. It has been exciting to watch. Here are a few of them … I am hoping you can see this … this is an all white Petunia Basket that has been in my Container Garden since late Spring. Today I discovered that two of the flowers have gone bi-colored. A little pink anyone … How cool is that!!!!!!! This Sheppard’s Hook is in the backyard. The...
Part 3: Finally, the Front Bed is beginning to bloom!!!! Here's a few more ...
Seems like a long time coming … but my front bed is finally beginning to bloom. So walked around with my camera in hand. There is so much that is idy-bidy yet within this bed that I added this spring; and I am most anxious to see them grow, fill in and bloom. As they do, I’ll get the ol’ camera. Thanks for sharing this with me. Here an an overview of our cozy little home and my front garden. Not too bad for the second summer here and starting from literally scratch. Be...
Part 4: New Perennial Blooms as of July 9, 2008
Here are a few more perennials that are beginning to bloom in my front garden … These are my Pink Coneflowers ... they are almost as tall as my front porch now. Here are my White Coneflowers ... I LOVE Coneflowers!!! These are 3 brand new Astra Blue Double Balloonflowers plants, started this spring. Just now beginning to show their colors. My big ol’ Pink Daylily, originally given to me by a wonderful parent at the school I worked for. I brought a piece of “her...
Part 5: What A Difference One Day Makes - July 10, 2008
Below are pics of more new flowers that opened up this morning. What a treat!!! So thought I would share them with you guys. I am getting so much enjoyment out of this garden!! I have to admit that out of all my Daylilies this Dwarf called Little Grapette is truly one of my favorites. I absolutely love the color. I brought a small piece of this little guy with me when we moved last year. I am really pleased with the growth this year. This is the first bloom on my Rudbeckia Prairie S...
Part 6: First Attempt at Dahlias ...
This is my first year at trying Dahlia’s. I know they are a very popular flower and lots of folk grow them. This past Spring hubby and I were making a trip to Home Depot (where else???) when I noticed these Dahlia bulbs. I thought for that price, why not try them. So bought two packages of deep burgundy, “talls”. Came home and promptly planted them in the front bed. And then late spring I also found, on sale, a pretty little Dahlia in the pink family. Needless to say I have ...
Part 7: Dwarf Hollyhocks !!
I have been waiting since Winter to see these flowers bloom … when I first placed an order for 6 of these plants. To be honest I had never heard of DWARF Hollyhocks. Well my wait is over. This morning as I went about my morning routine of watering containers and dead-heading plants I noticed these little guys had opened up their first flowers. Soooooo, I had to share my excitement with you all … Here is a good view of the plant and first blooms. So many more blooms to open!!! ...
Part 9: Sweet Pea
Shawn, our wonderful mailman gave me three Sweet Pea starts. I was thrilled because I have never grown them before. I decided to plant them in the Zinnia garden, which is right by the back patio. My understanding is they smell wonderful and what better place then right next to my swing!! :-) Turned out that only one of the three starts survived; but as you can see it is just thriving. I have been watching and waiting since early June for this vine to “do something”. Figured if...
Part 10: My Rudbeckias and a few of their friends ...
I do love watching everything bloom … here are some of the latest. Enjoy … Brown Eyed Susan that Damocles gave me … thanks again “D”!!! Rudbeckia Prairie Sun ... they are beginning to spread and bloom like crazy. I love this flower!! Dwarf Hollyhock has gotten a bit taller with more blooms now. It looks so dainty, but the stem is quite strong. Also my white Coneflowers behind it. Orange Gerber Daisies that hubby surprised me with in early June. I do l...
Part 11: Oranges and Lemons Gaillardia
They were just begging to have “their” picture taken … so pretty and “sparkling” in the afternoon sunlight. Gaillaridas are also called Blanket Flowers. They need well drained soil and plenty of sun. “Oranges and Lemons” are very prolific. They can handle poor soil conditions, summer humidity and winter cold.18-24” high x 15-18” wide; Perennial in zones 5-9.
Part 12: Pardancanda 'Sangria' or Candylily
First saw this flower in the White Flower Farm Catalog and fell in love with it. I had never heard of it before; and really wanted to try growing a few. So placed my order last winter. Now here it is August 2nd, and I have my FIRST BLOOM!!!! I was very excited this afternoon, to say-the-least!!! There are plenty of buds too; so if they do open in a cluster, I will add that photo later to this blog. The Pardancanda is a cross between two plants—the Vesper Iris and Blackber...
Part 13: When You Least Expect It ...
Okay, I am sooooooo EXCITED right now!!!! We spent the afternoon at my sister-in-law’s home. She is an avid gardener as well, so was really looking forward to walking through her beautiful gardens. As we are chatting and walking I noticed these tall yellow flowers in the distance … I thought, NO, they couldn’t be those Golden Glow’s that MsDeb has in her yard; and that I desperately want seeds of!! How crazy would that be!! So as we get closer … well sure enou...
Part 14: An August Daylily Surprise ... ohhh, another ...
I placed an order for a Dwarf Daylily Collection in February from a catalog that I like. And without getting into real specifics, my order did not arrive until until early June and of course all the daylilies were bare-root. So I just shoved them all in the ground, with no thought to where. I assumed that they would not bloom this summer. With next spring they would have some size on them and at that point I would transplant them all to better and more appropriate locations within my garden....
Part 15: My, my how the Mallow's have grown ...
This year my Zebrina Mallows had a really rough start. With the cold spring and surprise dipping of the temperatures in early summer … they just did not take kindly to this. BUT, finally they began to take off. I have been waiting for them to reach the top step of our front porch … and today I noticed that, by golly they had passed it up. Wonder just how tall they will get this summer! Normally my Mallows will grow until the first frost. They are always the last plant that I cu...
Part 16: Candy Lilies are Gorgeous this Morning!!!
I started a new blog cuz for the folks on dial up, I didn’t want to add more pictures to my other “Candylily” blog … ANYWAY … headed outside this morning to dead-head and water a bit when I noticed how pretty my Candy Lilies looked this morning. This is the first morning where the flowers have been in a cluster; verses one at a time. So, you know me, I had to take a few pics to show you! Hope you enjoy them … Here is one plant just full of flowers!!! ...
Part 17: Rebloomers ...
Ahhhhh, it’s Saturday. Normally it is a relaxing day; hubby in his favorite place (his woodshop) and me putzing around my yard. As I was tending to my front flower bed and “talking to my flowers” as I watered, weeded and dead-headed; I noticed that Little Grapette (Dwarf Daylily) was “smiling at me” with her big beautiful purple flowers. Yes, she is reblooming. Not quite the size she was earlier this summer, cuz a portion of her went happily home with Dini and he...
Part 18: One Last Gift ...
The nights are getting a bit cooler now and September is right around the corner. As I gaze out into my yard I am realizing that this is really the tail end of my flowers and their beautiful colors. Summer is quickly coming to an end. When hubby and I went away on our latest vacation, I had expected to come home to the dreary task of beginning to put my gardens to “bed”. A task that I hate because I know fall is basically here and winter not far behind. As we approached the ...
Part 19: The Front Porch with a few fall touches ..
This past Saturday I headed to our local Farmer’s Market and found a great sale on Mum’s. So picked up 4 for the front porch. So many colors to choose from, I had a difficult time; but finally chose the yellow/white and mauve colors. Thought they would show up best from a distance. I may add a few pumpkins in the coming weeks; but have to say this is about it for me this year. It has been a truly enjoyable year gardening; one I won’t soon forget. So now on to beautiful Fa...
Part 20: Small Cement Basket
I bought two sizes of cement baskets many years ago now, for our old home, and have had fun over the years filling them with different flowers. The smaller of the two baskets has always been somewhat of a challenge to grow flowers in because the basket truly will only accomodate one plant. Well this year I made a wonderful choice when I planted ONE “neon raspberry” Petunia within it. So while my other containers and baskets are dying back, this little Petunia is blooming like c...
Part 21: Against all odds ...
November 13, 2008 This Dwarf Gaillardia in my front garden is just blooming away despite the cold, wind and SNOW. What tickles me about this little plant is for most of the summer I got nothing from it other than beautiful leaves. Maybe it just wanted to be the “star” of my garden … all alone … just blooming away!! And then I found a few rose buds on one of my ground cover roses … I do love the raspberry color.
