First saw this flower in the White Flower Farm Catalog and fell in love with it. I had never heard of it before; and really wanted to try growing a few. So placed my order last winter. Now here it is August 2nd, and I have my FIRST BLOOM!!!! I was very excited this afternoon, to say-the-least!!! There are plenty of buds too; so if they do open in a cluster, I will add that photo later to this blog.

The Pardancanda is a cross between two plants—the Vesper Iris and Blackberry Lily. It likes full to part sun and well drained soil. It is a Perennial in zones 5-9; height is 15-18”.

That is so pretty, and I like the lily-type flower with the iris-type plant. But then I think iris plants are pretty even when they’re not in bloom!

ThanksBon and Dini!!! I really like this plant. Worth the wait for the blooms.
Bon, funny you mention that Gaillardia. It is one of the 3 dwarfs that I bought this spring … and the only one to bloom thus far; and it is the smallest!!! Just looks so pathetic with it’s one little bloom on it. Hoping for better performances next summer.

That’s a really neat flower.
How tall does it get?
Is it a perennial?
If so, to what zones is it hardy?

jroot … It is a Perennial in zones 5-9; height is 15-18”. Truly looks like an Iris till it blooms. The stalks are so nice and strong. Out of 4 plants, two have buds and one is blooming at the moment. Curious to see if the other two will bloom this year.

I love that one. I have some of the orange /spots ones, and a yellow one. They are also known as Blackberry lilies, because when they go to seed… the seed pod looks like a big Blackberry.

From what I have read, they are a cross between the Blackberry Lily and Vesper Iris … I am sure that you know better than I, what they are commonly called, being my first year even growing them. I find it quite wonderful how strongly you can truly see both plants in this “crossing”.
Do you have pic’s of yours?? I would love to see the different colors … Supposidly ‘Sangria’ is one of the newest varieties, but again only going by what the catalog says.
I know Damocles has a beautiful, large bunch in his garden; not sure what color they are. I’ll have to ask him.

How’d they do it?
Belamcanda chinensis x Pardanthopsis dichotoma
I am curious about it, do you know any more?

Nope, can’t help ya with that. Just saw them in a catalog and initially loved the flower they produced. Then did a little more reading on what they were within my fav catalog. It has fabulous descriptions … called White Flower Farm. It is also where I ordered these little guys from.
The catalog does mention that it took 15 years to develop this new color. I bet if you goggle them you would find out much more info.
