My Container Gardens #2: A Few More Finds ...

« Part 1: The Beginning ... Finding just the right containers ... Part 2 of My Container Gardens series Part 3: First Flowers »

Hooray, it’s Sunday morning and I’m off to the Flea Market!! Can’t wait to see if any new vendors are there. Hoping I have better luck than last week …

Park the truck and in I go … Wow, looks like I might have better luck. The second vendor I walk by has several huge, old stock pots, in many different colors. Those would be really pretty planted and for $5.00, I’m sold.

Now, I had been lamenting at hubby about my failure to find that child’s old wooden potty chair. He thought I was a bit crazy when I first mentioned it to him … but has since “gotten the idea” (or I think he has). He has offered to build my little chair. I just need to find a small pot for him to size the chair around. So after his offer, I definitely want to come home with that small pot today!! I continue to wander around, looking at this and that and … Will You Look At That!!! There it is … waiting just for me … a small iron pot, just the right size for the little chair. Haggled a bit with the price and added it to my shopping bag. I’m in business now!!!!!

As I headed toward the Exit, I noticed two wooden, leaded paned windows. Hmmmmmm, they look really cool, but how would I used them???? I (okay hubby) could hang them as visual dividers behind my front porch glider or I could strategically place them in my Container Bed surrounded by vibrant colored flowers. Not sure, but I like the price, so I’ll get them and worry about just how I am going to use them later.

Truck is all loaded up with my finds and as I head home I am beginning to plan out my garden; where I might place different items and plants. Then I remember that I have, stored dowstairs, several large basket that will play nicely off the metal stock pots.

I’m quite pleased with the few items I have now … I can actually envision the garden now with all it’s quirky “treasures” and colorful flowers both filling my treasures and in-between the rocks. I’m definitely on my way … just a few more things …

Mike ...Those are indeed beautiful!!! Especially like that watering can!!! I have a great appreciation for people who can paint and draw; as for me, well, I flunked elementary art (no I am not kidding!). Can’t seem to get what I see down to my hands and onto paper. But I do love to arrange items and work with colors. Hmmmmm … I have in the past attempted some stenciling on a few wooden planter boxes that hubby made for me. I might have to look into stenciling those iron pots. Could be fun … THANKS for the idea Mike!!!!

Looks like you made some great findings once again GrandmaT….tks for sharing the photos…..I am glad your weather permitted you to start hitting the flea markets. I can’t wait for our markets to begin here…..Suppose to start the local farmer markets toward the end of April here…. You can share your nice spring weather anytime you like. I have 2 of those jugs. I haven’t used them in the garden yet. One was my great grandmothers and the other was my husbands grandmothers. I may just use them for cut flowers indoors such as yours. Beautiful!

Nice arrangement Mike!!!! Flowers look lovely in the pitcher!! I LOVE to put cut flowers in lots of odd containers. I have crystal canisters that my children bought me for Christmas one year and I have potted my African Violets in them … just got to let your imagination run a bit. It’s fun …

Thank you Mike!
This is gorgeous!
I am on dial up and the first time around, I got a picture that was barely one inch square!
You and your wife make a great team!!
The wooden part, is it an old ashtray holder?
I have two of those and did not know what to do with them!

The wooden part is something I made, we have three or four of them being non smokers we tend to keep them by the armchair for tea or coffee.
I am a professional woodturner but I would rather enjoy the gardening site which is pleasure than subscribe to the sister site of woodwork. ( a few years ago I spent two weeks in Pennsilvaniia and produced 4 books on woodturning) I stayed in Paradise near a town called Intercourse and worked in the publishers called Schiffers in Atglen apart from a trip to Lancaster thats my total exploits in America,

Thought I would give you a quick peek into what I have been working on these past weeks. I did head to the Fabric Store in town and bought a yard of pretty floral material. Been spending my evenings cutting out all the various patterns in hopes that I can decopague the patterns onto the ol’ Blue Stock Pot. I’ll post photos of the pot when I am done … been fun thus far.

BELOW: The yard of marterial purchased for this project

BELOW: A few pieces of the floral pattern I have cut out

That’s some fine detail work, G’ma! Those pots will look great when they’re done. Are you using a weatherproof Modge-Podge, or are these pots staying indoors?

THANK YOU for ALL the wonderful and encouraging comments!!!!

Yah MsDeb … it is a lot more work than I had first thought … my fingers hurt after a while. But I am finding it kind of addicting and a bit therapeutic. HAHA!!

Eklectic … thinking about some sort of orange or yellow upright growth plant for this pot … could be pretty. Hmmmmm, never thought about leaving it empty ….. hmmmmmm ….

“D” ... still heading outside with the pot. Hubby has a sort of clear, weatherproof poly that we will coat everything with.

“Mike” ... you know this is ALL your fault with your “Canal Art” ... that was my inspiration … hahahahaha!!!

Sooooooo, now if it only turns out like I want it to …. :-)
