I am 32 years old and a new homeowner AND married to a woman who is wonderful at everything except anything to do with plants. Looking for ideas to liven up my backyard. It is pretty much a "clean slate" right now.

Trying to get a good background on gardening before I invest a bunch of money.

Ultimately I would like a large vegetable garden, a few fruit trees, and a large perennial flower garden for along the back fence.

I am always looking at other people's projects for inspiration.

Welcome to GT, Dave. How exciting to have a clean slate to start gardening. You are right to plan first. Get expert help, either from a local nursery or a good gardening book from the library. Looking at neighbourhood gardens is also helpful (in season) as you can see what will work in your zone and who might be knowledgeable, you may be able to use this experienced gardener as a resource. Gardeners generally love to talk about their gardens and love to share their knowledge.
If I had to do it over, I woud try to put in hard surfaces first, ie patio and walkways, and trees and plantings of bushes that require more space as they grow. When it comes to flower gardens, start small and enlarge as you gain knowledge.

Welcome to GT, Dave. We look forward to sharing ideas with you, and you with us. It is good to see that you are participating already. Bravo!

Listen to Iris’s ideas and suggestions. Her garden and yours have some similarities. Definitely go for the hard landscaping first, although you can certainly start some plants, and heel them in to a prepared area, and later move them to the premium place in your particular plot of land.

We bought our green houses at LOWES for about $40.00. We live in an apartment and fits perfectly.

If you need more help finding them let me know and I will try to search for them at other places. I do not know what names of stores you have there in Ontario. So far the only thing I have ordered online is our Earth Boxes- arriving this Monday.

I agree with you. I am learning a bit more and still excited to re-sow and see what happens.

Thank you for your reply:-)

I’m getting the shakes—“Dave withdrawal”. What’s new in your gardening adventure?

I am back to work now after being off for 4 months – so I won’t be on AS much but I will try to be on as much as possible.

I am working at St Michaels Hospital in Toronto, we are putting in 2 backup generators on the roof that run on diesel fuel and we’re running the diesel lines and the exhaust.

Yesterday I bought all of the lumber for my raised beds, and today I completed one of them and half of another.

I am going to have 3 8×4x1 beds along the fence, located in the spot you recommended when I first signed up MsDeb :)
