Finally got the fireplace to the point to where we could have a fire in it.. :) After 1.5 MONTHS waiting for the people to ship out the fireplace damper, we finally got it in a few days ago… Heavy freakin 90lb box.. It was re-boxed into some other light weight box.. I thought for sure the cast iron would be shattered when I opened it up...

Help me Decide: Dormer or Skylights - 14 replies

I need help deciding on something for the chicken coop.. I can’t decide on if I want ONE dormer, or TWO skylights on either slope. I’d asked at BYC for their two cents, but really want to know what you all think. I’m still 99% sure that I will be doing the cupola either way. I just can’t decide though on if I want to g...

Landscape Software - 1 reply

Ok… Who uses any and do you know of any decent free software? I was going to just use Visio to do it, but frankly, it’s lacking that landscape flare even with added icons. I’m wanting something that can do the colorful layouts so I can get everything mapped out the way I want it, down to each individual flower grouping.. ;) ...

Not gardening.. Well based cooling? - 12 replies

So anyway, I’d been thinking about this for some time. I’m pretty well sold on trying out a solar heating system to augment the HVAC unit.. But I’d come up with something else that I would not mind trying. So here’s the deal.. We have a well on the property that is not used for drinking water. In fact it’s not us...

Know that some times things can get lost on LJ due to the fast nature of the site. Wanted to see if any of you all had ideas on how to do this restore. http://lumberjocks.com/topics/6361 Here’s a picture of the actual radio. The side veneer cleans up nicely and looks good with a coat of water. The face, is just plywood.. which looks ...

Toy Trains & Slotcars - 5 replies

While I was up fixing things at my mothers house I took the time to excavate dads old Lionel trains and etc from the loft in the work shed. They used to be displayed in the house but dad eventually put them into storage in their original boxes in the shed. Since my son (going on 3) is obsessed with trains I thought I’d dig them out and ...

Plant ID Please? - 11 replies

I’d seen these at Lowes for 50 cents each and decided to pick some up. They have a woody stem to them and do not look like annuals at all so I thought I’d take my chances and pick them up. Size is about 12” tall by 12-16” wide, variegated leaves, semi hardwood branching. CLICK TO ENLARGE. I’ve p...

Training Tomatoes, How do you Prefer? - 17 replies

So, we’ve got 70 tomato plants that have been producing like bang busters for a long while now. Problem is they’re so gigantic that any time it rains, at least 10 pull their stakes and fall over. Some have even just “snapped” their stakes in half they’re so big. We’d lost a few to root disruption because of...

The Unknown Plant #3 - Shrub - 6 replies

Stumbled On: 35 Pest and Disease Remedies - 5 replies

Just stumbled onto this and thought everyone would enjoy the read. Japanese beetle bustersLike slugs and snails, Japanese beetles have plagued gardeners for years. One way to stop them in their tracks is to suck them up with a small, handheld vacuum. Another way is to throw a handful of larkspur or delphinium leaves into a blender, add the b...

SOLVED: The Unknown Plant #2 - 6 replies

Second one.. Let’s see if we can figure this one out, too.. This plant was in a pot that moved with us and had daylilies in it. We took the lilies out and left this thing. It was small at the time and had large leaves, so we thought we’d see what it was. Not sure what it is. So….. Any ideas? Click to view the BIG pictu...
