Part 1: Blooming Around The Yard - Back From Flu
Well, been gone for a while due to the flu. Really knocked me out and ended up getting stuck in my lungs which made it painful and difficult to breathe. Anyway, thought I’d post what’s in bloom in the yard. I’ve also got another unknown I’ll be posting in a bit to see if anyone can figure it out. These are the Irises that my wife doesn’t like.. She’d said to trash them but me, I like Irises so I kept them, in a way. I tossed them into a depression ...
Part 2: Some minor updates
Just wanted to put up a few shots of things around the yard right now. The “invasive” plants my father in-law gave us are doing nicely beside the power box. All are in bloom and look really good together. The poor ring around the light pole of lilies seems way over filled to me. I’ll be pulling out some of the more productive lilies to make room for the others. Grapes are doing nicely. The lone grape vine that we kept is full of grapes, and the new plants we...
Part 3: So Much to do.. More on the List.
Well, here’s some more things I need to get done.. Father In-Law dropped off this big holly today that he’d dug up.. Said if I could use it.. Told him I can always find a use.. It’ll be going in the front yard somewhere which will have a bed built around it. Some odd moth hanging to a basket in the front yard.. Thought it was pretty. I’ve got the supplies in that I need to make the screen for in front of the power box. Happy Sadie Grace, watchin...
Part 4: Garden's Doing Well!
Well the garden is doing very well. The tomatoes are growing really nicely. Though some things have yet to sprout, the bulk of it is all coming along nicely. As you can see, Donovan is enjoying the garden as always. He’s only picked off one tomato so far, which, he quickly learned was a bad thing until ripe. Just look at those tomatoes.. Nice.. Nice indeed.. Growing really well.. We’d have to tie the plants up at least three times already. The purple peppers are d...
Part 5: Happy Landscape.. Kinda..
I’m hardly finished with anything. Though things are underway, which is great; they are far from finished. I’d been working to clean up around the old oak tree so that I could get it in better shape and do a proper mulch ring around it, for the sake of the tree. The tree had a serious problem with Virginia Creeper and an issue with Poison Ivy over it as well. The one wasn’t so bad, but eesh! The creeper was doing it huge damage. I’d never know that stuff gets so ...
Part 6: Garden's Close to Harvest..
LOL.. No, not the whole thing.. That would be an absolute mirricle. No, the radishes are close to being large enough to harvest. Several of them are a nice size, not too big, and soft to the pallet. We’ll be starting to pull some of the larger ones tomorrow and figuring out what to do with them.. I kind of over planted and now we’ve got a 50’ row packed FULL of radishes.. They’ve done extremly well. In other news. I’ve got my fruit trees in, as well ...
Part 7: Some Pretty.. Some Evil
I’ll start off with the evil. I’d been holding off on finishing the fern bed and posting it as a final project due to my war against this blasted wild vine. It’s grown back up from nothing at all and pushed under the cardboard and out the side. My only action is to pull all the cardboard and destroy any growth on a weekly basis.. What fun. On the bright side, the front flower bed is just about done.. I just need to mulch a small bit by the walk, but I’m ho...
Part 8: Full Beds & More
I know some of you have said that you’d like to see wider pictures instead of just the single flowers so I thought I’d toss these up. There’s still a bunch of work that needs done mind you, so if some looks rough you know it’s slated for a spit shine. This is a set of pics of the front post light that I’d put in shortly after we moved in. Originally there were 4 kinds of lilies here but we decided to go with just one and used the two big clumps of Russian R...
Part 9: Still Here. Busy With Life..
Hey folks, I’m still around and come by to read when I can. Just been busy with life in general and trying to get things done. There’s not much happening around the yard. I’ve still got half a pile of mulch that I had delivered which I can’t seem to get to doing anything with. I did build a new flower bed near the house, but it’s not at any point which I want to show it off.. ;) Garden is winding down. Been pulling tomato plants as they die off and layin...
Part 10: Ike passed by, said to tell you hi! :p~
Well Ike paid us a visit here in KY. Was high winds with a little rain tossed in. Ended up snapping two large limbs out of the pecan tree as well as several dozen smaller ones. Only one limb in the chestnuts fell however. Front yard looks like a mine field with all the chestnuts on the ground. Power went off around 9:30 this morning, good thing we have a gas stove for breakfast. Ended up going out to eat supper instead of trying to muck around at home. Stopped in WalMart to pick up some...
Part 11: Season's Winding Down
Took a walk around the yard today with my old Kodak DC290 in hand, figured I’d take a few shots of what’s around the yard. Around front in what I call the courtyard garden by the pond I’d laid out the rocks to edge the new flower bed. I still need to move more rocks over and need to pick up bags of mortar to get them set in place. Also need to mow there for that matter. Out back on the burn pile is the bulk of the damage that Ike caused to the yard. It’s not ...
Part 12: Hey Folks!
Thought I’d stop in and say howdy.. :) Not much going on around here and certainly not much gardening going on. Been busy with the holiday season, for sure. I ended up not being able to get all of the stuff planted that I’d gotten from Lowes, so I used the top of my 75 gallon aquarium as a greenhouse, like it was kinda built for. Originally I had live filtration running up top. Regardless, makes a good holding place for 2 mums (misplaced) and the sedum. Surprisingly s...
Part 13: Storm of the Decade
Well, that’s what they’re calling it… I don’t doubt that people north of us are getting it worse. Here’s a few pictures from the ice storm thus far.. Round two will hit tonight and add more accumulation. The sound is trees snapping is rather… enchanting. Especially with the pretty view.
Part 14: Storm Pictures: The Pretty
Here are the pretty pictures from the storm that I’d taken.. Just a few, more are on my Facebook account. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/album.php?aid=2012328&id=1460724611&ref=mf
Part 15: Storm Pictures: The Not So Pretty
These are some of the not so pretty. Lots more damage than I expected. One of the Elm trees Top of the 200+ year old Pecan tree Under the Pecan tree… Chinese Chestnuts… Elm by the road One of the Wild Cherry
Part 16: Ice Storm 09, Post Processing
I fired up my processing software, which I rarely do and cleaned up the photos. These are resized copies of ones I’m most likely going to get prints made of. ~~~Click to enlarge~~~
Part 17: Some Cleanup & First Bloom of the Season
I spent some time today cleaning up in the yard and burning off a pile of stuff. Ended up burning what was left under the Pecan tree and several of the cherry limbs that had to be removed. Still a PILE left to deal with, unsure what I’m going to do with all that. By the time I took this, it was a smoldering pile of ash and leaves. I’ve got to stir it from time to time, else the leaves and whatnot at the bottom will never really burn off. Oh well though if it doesn’t. ...
Part 18: Spring Time Walkabout
March 10th, 2009 I decided to take Donovan outside to play for a while with camera in toe. Also let Sadie Grace and Stormy out, been training Stormy on the shock collar. While outside I figured I’d snap some pictures of everything popping up. The two Nectarine trees I’d planted along the driveway are blooming. They’re spindly looking, but hoping they really fill out this year. The Yarrow is coming up nicely and looks beautiful with it’s feathery leaves. It wi...
Part 19: Things are Poppin'
Everything’s coming up rather nicely for the most part now and has either started huge growth or pushed out leaves. This is the sole Hyacinth on the property. One of these days I’ve got to add more. My Sedum is doing great. I expect it to fill this area with a mat of green this year. The Nectarine blooms have all opened and it’s starting to push leaves. I’d love to have SOME kind of fruit from it this year, but doubt it. Down the row by the front walk. A...
Part 20: New Beds, Plantings and Such
Well, I decided to take the top layer off the old strawberry bed. Not being a wasteful person I put the old top to use. I’d laid it down beside the new raised beds and used it for herbs. Mostly mints. Speaking of new beds, not sure if I’d mentioned it but I’d come across a large section of coroplast. In fact, it blew off a truck as it drove by and landed in my yard as I watched. It’s the same material used in greenhouses but it’s built in a manner which...
Part 21: Fruit, Flower and Vegetables
Been so busy with trying to get yard work done, the coop and general life I hadn’t had much time to post anything so I thought I’d do a walkabout. The Nectarine trees I got so cheap last year from Lowes? Well they’ve actually got fruit on them… Sad looking trees though, but I’m sure they’ll fill out nicely in a couple years. The flower bed I did along the driveway is looking lovely. It’s really filled out well. The Yarrow is close to blooming a...
Part 22: Pretty Pretty.. What's New and Blooming
Well, my alarm clock woke me up at 5:30 again today with it’s usual ~~Bucka Bucka Booooooooo!~~ so we had to get up and take them outside to the coop. While out we stopped by to see some of the fresh blooms. Two of the Daylillies are blooming today. I’m not surprised that more than one opened on the same day, considering we have so many.. One of these days I’ve got to count how many clumps we do have.. Eeesh. Anyway, will be a busy busy weekend, what with the coop to g...
Part 23: Trying to Keep up..
Piles of stuff going on now, between working on the finishing touches on the coop and dealing with the garden, plus all the work inside like cleaning the basement out, the yardsale and moving the shop down to the basement.. It’s hard to keep up. Thought that I’d take a moment to post a few pictures from around the yard though.. They’re a couple days old, but it hasn’t changed that much yet.. ;) This is one of the many blooming right now. It’s off to the sid...
Part 24: Big Show.. Or at Least Medium Show..
Took these yesterday after a rain and just got to the point to where I can post them up.. So… HA! Now I have soggy flower pictures, too, X… :D Anyway, here they be. St. Johns Wart Cone Flower Nandina
Part 25: The Show Overview
And here’s the rest in a much wider view. The garden along the walk is popping left and right. In a few days I figure there will be color the whole way down. So going to love breaking up this sidewalk and putting in something more flowing down through here. It’s almost like we were meant to be here.. This is what is across the road in the ditch.. Runs for a good way either direction and almost in conjunction with our property line. The dog run is still looking jam p...
Part 26: Spewing Fish, Pole Beans & Throw Away Seedlings
We have a little chimenia fish that we have had sitting by the pond for forever and decided to make him actually do something, so the wife stuffed him full of dirt and then shoved Sedum in his mouth and up at the tail.. I think it looks rather cute, if even hung over. Now.. As for the pole beans.. We’ve got a two rows that are around 16-20’ long which needed support so this is what I came up with. I’m sure you recall my past post about my plan. Since they’re sen...
