Garden Maintenance #7: Lawn Sweeper

Well, I picked up the Craftsman high speed lawn sweeper I had on order from Sears.

(not my pic)

I decided to go with it because of the higher gear ratio in the gearbox, which translates to higher brush speed at lower mower speed.

I’ve got to say I’m rather happy with it and it’s preformed well.

Today I took it out again to give it a run around the yard under the Pecan tree to pick up more nuts. It worked rather great at that, set to almost the lowest setting. Picked them up and tossed them right in. Almost got them all.. Almost.

I’d also wanted to build up a brown matter pile for the compost, so I had something carbon to toss on to all the bad apples so that it’s all leveled out. I’d found that sweeping grass up was best done at almost the highest setting. If not set high enough it tended to stop the wheels and just drag the unit.

To finish up my playing I set it back down so that it beat the ground and did a few rounds around the Chinese Chestnuts. It swept up the little spike ball landmines without much issue, though there are some that had been sitting on the ground for a while which I’d run over several times by now while mowing, which it could not pick up. Fresher balls, it knocked into the catch basket without issue however.

All in all I’m very happy with the sweeper. Granted, I’ve got no intentions of running around sweeping my lawn after each mowing. I think that’s nuts. But to pick up the other nuts and to build up some grass for the compost pile, it’s absolutely wonderful.

Certainly two thumbs up on this sweeper. It really is the top of the line, in that sub $300 price range. Now, want to spend a grand on a sweeper? There are certainly better. But that would be insane for home use only.

:)

I’ve got three lawn sweepers and they come with two arms and fingers and none of them work even after throwing thousands of dollars at them so I’ld say that for 300 bucks you got a great deal
