I think it’s fun to create little nooks with the form of rooms outside. This is a spot in the back that I’m blocking in.

I’ve got the posts in the ground and will cut them off at a level point before attaching the white rails that you see. They were actually cast iron decorative supports for a slight porch overhang that we decided to change and took these with us. I’ll be painting them flat black and will most likely brush a little green onto them to give a little more look to them. They’re a nice vine pattern and should make cute fence rails.

Under them we’ll be planting a selection of daisies to fill out the area. The poles you see off to the right behind are the grape supports. This will give a nice green “wall” to the side of the swing, and to the other side will be the short daily “wall”..

Insert a path or two, some nice shade plants under the small tree, should be nice once done and filled out in a few years.

In the back of the “room” between the fig and the plum tree I’m most likely going to do another style of fence with the branches of a large Crape Myrtle as rails. We’ve got one that needs some pruning of its old growth. Then we’ll remove what seems to be crappy field lilies in favor of better lily choices or perhaps other kinds of plants.

Here’s a picture of the porch they came off of. There was one on either side against the wall that was just for decoration and one in the center, however it seemed to be just decoration as well.

We decided to resume work on the old house when our listing was about to expire, so we ripped these out and was going to do more work on the patio. Ended up someone pushed to buy the house after the listing expired and we’d had it in shambles. They had an inspector come through and he didn’t say anything about the supports missing so I figure it was indeed alright. Besides, if we did indeed stay I was going to monitor it for any possible sag and if it did start to sag I was going to put a better center pillar in.

Anyway, the house did indeed end up selling and we moved off to somewhere with a bit more room. Granted, I’d have loved to have 5-10 acres but the wife didn’t want to be THAT far into the country.

Here’s a nice shot of the rail. I’ll be pressure washing it to blow off the loose paint then will give a nice coat of oil base exterior.

Yeah.. I wish there was an architectural salvage yard around here, but no.. I’m lucky to find over priced junk at the local antique stores.
