Around the Yard #26: Spewing Fish, Pole Beans & Throw Away Seedlings

« Part 25: The Show Overview Part 26 of Around the Yard series Part 27: Spring Time Busy Work »

We have a little chimenia fish that we have had sitting by the pond for forever and decided to make him actually do something, so the wife stuffed him full of dirt and then shoved Sedum in his mouth and up at the tail.. I think it looks rather cute, if even hung over.

Now.. As for the pole beans.. We’ve got a two rows that are around 16-20’ long which needed support so this is what I came up with. I’m sure you recall my past post about my plan. Since they’re sending tendrils out all over now I needed to get it done..

The tripods are held together with bolts and washers, and the 1-1/2” PVC is just slip jointed together. In the center I have a 2” T with a 1-1/2” reducer at the bottom for the center support, sporting a 1-1/2” T at the bottom to keep it from sinking into the dirt.

The only worry I have is that the center slip joint will fail and fall apart, allowing the support to collapse.. But really, it’s a tight fit.. Those who use PVC pipe knows how tight it is.. So.. I’m hoping it will not be a problem.

At the end of the season it can be loosened up and folded for storage out of the way.

As for the throw away seedlings.. That friend who has the Daylily farm? Well these are some seedlings he was tossing last year which he did not want, nor felt was worthy of registering.. I dunno about you, but those are some pretty “trash” flowers.. ;)

Bon: No, the seedlings are several years old. Flowered first last year and he didn’t like them.

Oh ok.I thought it seemed a little quick for the seeds to grow that big in one year.

Thanks.. ;)

So, who’s taking bets on the pole bean system.. Total failure with 200 or so plants destined to hit the ground? Or will it work swimmingly..

I am so jealous of you zone 5 and 6ers…

I normally don’t go for too much lawn art but I do like the idea with the fish… especially next to the pond like that.

gosh.. you always have such amazing things to show us
toss away plants.. !!!

pole bean system… well. ... I’m going to say that if it starts leaning you will prop up the centre and in the end will have success. :)

Like the idea of the PVC for the beans!!

And the fish “planter” is a great idea! Looks lovely.
And those Daylilies, I would love to have them in my beds! They look great Scott!

Had some high winds come through last night which knocked the one end over and the pipe down. I’m scuttling the PVC idea in favor of doing two more tripods. I’ll then wrap twine around each tripod @ 16” spacing to allow growth up the mas.

I could anchor the tripods into the ground, but with the winds we get from time to time, I’d still be worried about them pulling out. Especially being what will basically be a growing curtain to catch the wind.

As for the PVC, I can re-purpose it later on.

At least it happened now, and not when it was supporting all those runners!

I had put them back up minus the pole and a storm blew through.. We lost 10’ off the top of our one Paw Paw tree, and a large limb out of the pecan.. Needless to say, they blew over again.

~sigh~

I’m going to cut some stakes and tie them to the ground to be sure.

Nice shots, Scott.

Sorry to hear about the trees. We invest so much time and energy, not to mention $$$, that it is always upsetting to see damage to them.

Rather bummed about the Paw Paw.. They had such beautiful shape.. Both of them matched.. Now it’s all wonkey looking.

Guess I’ll wait and see how it grows out next season before I decide anything. They’re slow growing though.

Scott I always use rubber coated rebar rods to anchor my trellis’ and tripods down and they work great when the winds get pretty high.I like that I can pound them in pretty deep and then I wire them onto the trellis and tripods.Maybe something like this could work to anchor your beans.

Sound advice, Bon.. Thanks for reminding me about that. I’ll see if I can’t pick some up in the next few days.
