Part 1: From Here to There
From Here to There After having moved around abit, I’ve settled here. Here is where I’m going to stay. Here is south central Indiana….Owen Co. to be vague. About an hours drive SSW of Indianapolis. I don’t live in a town unless you count the sign down the road that says “Freeman” on it. I’m about 12 miles west of Bloomington and about 10 miles south of Spencer. “Freeman” is just what this particular spot has been called for so many year...
Part 2: The Operation...or how it's supposed to be.
The General Layout Out of 23 acres, about 9 acres are available for farming or ranching. These 9 acres are a natural pasture consisting of some old alfalfa, clover, general grasses, and various weeds such as goldenrod, ironweed and such. It is surrounded by wooded areas consisting of oak, poplar, cherry, maple, sassafras, and hickory. In addition, there is an ample supply of wild black raspberries, blackberries, and some paw paw. I have a source for heat, wood and stone building materia...
Part 3: Seed Journal 2008
Seed Journal 2008 Appendix A While this is not in the position of an appendix, it is one nevertheless. Since it is ready, I am uploading it. I’m including it in this blog series as a matter of course. A blog is basically a journal of activities. This doesn’t have anything to teach per se. But, if I’m going to make an attempt at building a farm/market operation, then it might provide context to other things I put in this series. This is also in a standard document on my own system so that I...
Part 4: Seed Journal 2008 A
Seed journal 2008 – Appendix B Here is the next installment of the seed journal. Things not listed are the items that have already been planted. These items include the other fruit trees we’ve had for a couple of years. It also includes a number of items that we’ve seed banked from previous years. Descriptions are taken directly from Jung Seed Co. and have been edited for content, format, and grammar. Tomatoes – Mr. Stripey This heirloom from the Mid-Atlantic states can be traced bac...
Part 5: Water, water everywhere
Water, water, everywhere…or how to get it there When water is available but far removed from the growing sites it is useful to have a convenient way of extending the source to accommodate the location of those sites. Standard garden hoses, while useful, have presented some logistical problems. Until the water line was extended, I had to use three or four 100’ hoses to get where I wanted to go. The water pressure I have is rather high and has a tendency to blow hoses out, even the ...
Part 6: Intermezzo
Intermezzo While contemplating the upcoming planting season, something finally clicked. There are two elements that must be dealt with once crops are planted, weeds and bugs. Gardening for farm/market needs to be efficient. Labor and time determine whether any operation will be profitable, whether it be gardening, making widgets, or waiting on tables at a restaurant. Doing things by hand is labor intensive and takes time. Using power equipment is less labor intensive and takes less time. T...
Part 7: And so it begins....
Through the kindness of a neighbor, for the second year, the gardens have been thoroughly tilled. While the strategy is shifting to raised beds, tilling will suffice until those beds can be established. In this case, pictures serve better than words. First up is the small garden. This usually contains popcorn. But, this year, red kidney beans shall be added for their nitrogen contribution. In addition, on the south side (so the corn doesn’t shade anything), tobacco will be planted. T...
Part 8: The Main Act.....
The garden of 2008 has proven to be very informative. Because of all the spring rain, everything got started late. This year some plants were started indoors. This proved rather futile. It would seem there are aspects of this technique that are not fully understood yet. Then there was a problem with tillage. This update covers what has been found to date and other information that might prove useful to others. Images are at the end with descriptions. Starting Plants Indoors The problems...
