My Garden 2008-- the beginning #4: The beginning #4

« Part 3: So much for an early Spring! Part 4 of My Garden 2008-- the beginning series Part 5: The garden is up and looks healthy. »

Due to time restraints this year my garden is not getting as much care as it should.
I had to move the sq foots to build my workshop so some plants didn’t get enough TLC
However my bananna potatoes did get into the containers I scrounged and are now peaking thru the compost / soil.

I will give the 4 plants a couple more days to leaf out and add more mix to the drum.
That should net me some nice suppers in august.

Eventually they will be up to the rim with a humongous root system of roughly 2 feet.

I did tomatoes the same way and they are now in flower after 2 weeks.

we didn’t get any potatoes in the ground this year. That’s a first.

I like the idea of the container and adding dirt.

Have always wanted to try the potatoes in containers, never gotten around to it!
Tried the tomatoes, but it did not really work for us!

Some people are using tires and claim success with that method of piling on more as the plants get larger.
I don’t find that solution attractive in my back yard however.
Eklectric, what happened when you tried the tomatoes?

They seem to need a lot, and I mean a lot of watering! If you went for a day without, they just about dried up!
As well, for some unknown reason, the bees did not pollinate them like they did when they were in the veg garden??!
My dad did the tire one for potatoes and it did work quite well!

One thing I usually do and did not this time( forgot) is to put a reservoir in the bottom of the tub that can overflow to the drain hole. I put a piece of rope/wick in this tray and run it up the center. This reservoir will hold my plants for about a week if it’s not really hot.
It’s great whenI go on holidays.
I don’t have and answer for the bees???
I suppose you could get your brush out. <g>

Here’s four of my tomatoes plants in one of those small containers:

They seem to enjoy the compost and with the cooler weather have bushed out nicelyand of course my secret tomato mulch!

Debbie:
The cool weather combined with the black tubs have helped them get good root.
I use a secret mulch recipe to help with growth too.
There aren’t a lot of bees around so I will be hand polinating them soon just to be sure I can get a first set.

Bon, this is the earliest i remember getting flowers on my plants to I have my fingers crossed.

p.s. I am planting marigolds among them for a bit of protection from insects.
