I formed a square with landscape timbers I had on hand. Mulched right over the grass and set the plants. They have had little care except to water them and feed with fish emulsion fertilizer a few times. More mulch was added where grass started to come through. The mulch is what ever I had on hand. Mostly this is tree waste and grass clippings. The soil is hard packed sand. The date on the photos is wrong. The correct date is 20070811
