Last month the challenge was made to do some “Winter Gardening” (or winter sowing as I’ve also seen it called). For me, this will be my first time at doing this – on purpose. Every spring I see some plant that has surprisingly re-seeded itself. I’ve had lettuce come up, onions, pumpkins and squash, and numerous flowers including the giant sunflower I had this year.
TYPE OF SEEDSToday, I thought it was time to really start thinking about what I want...

As you all know by now I had terrible luck with the many perennial seeds that I tried to sprout. Only the Mini Sunflowers sprouted and I was so disappointed. But with some encouragement from my GT friends I decided to try again with the annual seeds that I had been given. So last week I planted various seeds …
Then this morning, as I went to check on my “dirt” ... I noticed there was idy-bidy sprouts in yet another pot. The Picotee Cosmos seeds that Iris...

As many of you know…I am just starting my first indoor set up. I have shelving together, buying the lights in the next couple days, have half of my seeds, and will buying other various supplies this weekend.
I thought I had it all under control, but I am feeling nervous and like what I thought I knew, may not be right.

As most of you know I am rather new to starting plants from seeds … which to a lot of folk I suppose would be odd since I have been gardening for well over 30 years now. Just always bought “starts” or received divided pieces from friends of the plants I wanted. BUT, after being on GT and seeing the wonderful plants everyone has started from seed I was encouraged to give it a try.
Last year was not too successful. I believe I started too late and didn’t have adeq...

January 6, 2009
Being inspired by the January Gardening discussion I checked out the seeds that I have left over from last year and my records as to what we liked from last year and wanted to plan again this year…
I then went to a couple of Canadian Seed Companies and ordered some seeds:
Tomatoes – I ordered some paste tomatoes, some large, yummy tomatoes, and one package of cherry tomatoes. I selected seeds that were “early” and “late” varieties
...

Seed Journal 2008 Appendix A
While this is not in the position of an appendix, it is one nevertheless. Since it is ready, I am uploading it. I’m including it in this blog series as a matter of course. A blog is basically a journal of activities. This doesn’t have anything to teach per se. But, if I’m going to make an attempt at building a farm/market operation, then it might provide context to other things I put in this series. This is also in a standard document on my own system so that I...
