Curly Dock When mature, it looks like a wild horseradish plant (to me, anyway). Since horseradish an asset around fruit trees, I figured the curly dock must also be, as well. A little research tells me that there is a whole lot goodness with this weed: the leaves, when young, are edible and have a lemony flavour (confirmed) the seeds can be roasted and used as a coffee alternative a bruised leaf/stem can be used as a stinging nettle “remedy”, if you get into the st...
May 29/12 In-between rain showers today, I did a walk-about and took my trusty hoe with me in case I found some undesirables. Everything was looking lovely (oh my goodness, my Marsh Hibiscus has grown a foot taller since yesterday) ... “but” in a couple of places I found stands of curly dock. Rising high above the rest of the plants with its green stalk and spreading wide with its huge leaves, I decided that it didn’t fit and so I whacked at its stem. Now, I’v...
May 21, 2012 Last week I posted a link to one of the many videos created by Dave Wilson Nurseries talking about backyard gardening. After watching one, I had to watch them all. They are full of information and presented in a way that is easy to follow and, for me, left me thinking, “hey, I can do this!” The video on high density landscaping definitely caught our attention and, for me, plans were dancing through my head as I envisioned the possibilities. But I had questions a...
This is my last update in the month of April. The growth has been great. I’ve had some failures, but the overall experience has been wonderful. It feels good just to walk outside and see all of this growing right outside my front door. The kids are also very involved and have been great sharing the watering duties with me. They also like to help me pick the ripe strawberries and salad greens that we have been gathering every few days. Enjoy, Jeff http://youtu.be/iGzpL_aLtXc

A short video about some of the natural pest control methods that we are trying in our organic container garden in Las Vegas, NV. http://youtu.be/wVxsGzuWiJc
In mid-January this year, I decided to set a goal to loose 50lbs by the end of 2012 by eating healthier and staying active (I hate making New Years Resolutions, so I waited until January 10th to make mine). I quit eating fast food cold turkey. Drastically cut down on red meat (though I haven’t completely eliminated it from my diet yet), cut down on dairy, and limited carbs to whole grains and complex carbs (9 grain wheat bread, whole wheat tortillas, etc.) My rules for the diet a...
