Garden Maintenance #11: More Garden Work.

9 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 10 comments »

Well over the weekend my daughter, son and I worked on the garden some more. This weekend was time to clean out the chicken coop and get that sorted out.. I think there was around 10 bales of pine shavings in the coop, all of which went to the garden.. I figure a few more years of amending like this and that garden plot will go nuts.. Also considering buying some scoops of horse manure. Anyway.. While my daughter occupied my sons attention I spent time making the cleanout door for the c...

9 days ago by MsDebbieP | 6 comments »

March 7, 2010 I went through the flyers that picked up at the Stratford Garden Festival yesterday. Here are some of the interesting tidbits June 5th: 13 Annual Garden Fair, Water St. St Mary’s (free event) – sounds interesting pruning information (I will create a new blog about this as it is a whole topic in itself) grass: don’t start mowing until it is actively grown and is at least 8 cm tall ponds: start feeding fish when temp of water is 10 degrees C lawn...

GT Talk #11: Garden Festival: Stratford, 2010 Part II

10 days ago by MsDebbieP | 9 comments »

March 6, 2010(continued from previous blog) Information from the Presentations that I attended Session 1: Low Maintenance Gardening- mulch: use shredded mulch (pine, cedar) because it will decompose better- don’t smother perennials, pull the mulch back from them a bit- don’t put mulch up around tree trunks as it will rot the bark and the tree will die- create a saucer with the mulch, creating a pocket to retain water - annuals are water hogs – use containers for annual...

GT Talk #10: Garden Festival: Stratford, 2010 Part I

10 days ago by MsDebbieP | 10 comments »

March 6, 2010 With the morning sun shining brightly, Rick and I headed to Stratford. It was a gorgeous morning for the approx. 1 hour drive. At the show, we had a few minutes to wait until it opened. At the door, we were welcomed by this beautiful piece of art: I’m so glad we arrived early – we were able to see most of the exhibits without the crowds. During the day I did manage to bump into Jroot and his wife (my camera man had just went outside for some “fresh air...

Around the Yard #25: The Show Overview

277 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 14 comments »

And here’s the rest in a much wider view. The garden along the walk is popping left and right. In a few days I figure there will be color the whole way down. So going to love breaking up this sidewalk and putting in something more flowing down through here. It’s almost like we were meant to be here.. This is what is across the road in the ditch.. Runs for a good way either direction and almost in conjunction with our property line. The dog run is still looking jam p...

School Garden #1: planting

285 days ago by Bob Ewing | 6 comments »

Over the past two days, I had the pleasure of guiding students in kindergarten through grade four in a partial planting of the ornamental garden at the entrance of the school. The planting involved about 25 students. Next year the garden will be expanded. As we planted we talked about what soil is and the garden helpers, earthworms, spiders and the even smaller beings. We also chatted about annuals, self-seeding annauls, perennials and shrubs. The children asked questions and we eager g...

Your First Vegetable Garden

Suggestions from a guy who has gardened for more than 25 years …Start Small – For most beginners, smaller is better. A 100 square foot garden – say, 10 feet by 10 feet – is plenty. Even a 4 ft. by 5 ft. garden or a few containers on your deck or patio can be very rewarding. The Basics – there are 5 basic requirements: – Good soil – Seeds and/or plants – Water – Fertilizer – Weed and bug control.Good Soil – Good g...

How to Save Money by Growing More of Your Own FoodGrow highly productive vegetables – lots of yield for the space allocated – that you enjoy eating and that you can harvest from spring through fall. Since you’re limited to the surface area that you have on the ground, “go vertical” to get the most production from the space that you have.Waste nothing. Eat it, share it with someone in the community, or compost it.Money-saving VegetablesPole beans &#...
