Well over the weekend my daughter, son and I worked on the garden some more. This weekend was time to clean out the chicken coop and get that sorted out.. I think there was around 10 bales of pine shavings in the coop, all of which went to the garden..
I figure a few more years of amending like this and that garden plot will go nuts.. Also considering buying some scoops of horse manure.
Anyway.. While my daughter occupied my sons attention I spent time making the cleanout door for the c...

You might consider this post a bit of a clumsy tribute to Andy Rooney…..
A few years ago, after I started trying to increase the organic care of my yard, we had an explosion in the total toad population in the yard. And, some of them seemed to have simply no problem whatsoever also finding their way into the house, probably the result of my tendancy to garden and water in the early evening just before sunset, and also because I have the abominable habit of leaving the front door wi...

And here’s the rest in a much wider view.
The garden along the walk is popping left and right. In a few days I figure there will be color the whole way down.
So going to love breaking up this sidewalk and putting in something more flowing down through here.
It’s almost like we were meant to be here.. This is what is across the road in the ditch.. Runs for a good way either direction and almost in conjunction with our property line.
The dog run is still looking jam p...

The floor is finished and the cut is done for the floor level cleanout door. There is a STUPID framing mistake that I made, which means I need to build it up some else I can’t do walls.. No biggy.. I just wasn’t using my brain.
Here’s a view of the coop from the back porch. It’s just a bit away from the house. Because it’s visible from the road it needs to be extra pretty.. ;) I’ll be doing plantings around the run to mask it and make it look better.

Thought I’d snap a few pictures of the crew this morning. The rest of them are doing really really well. I’m letting my wife and daughter pick up some more this afternoon after school at the co-op to take the place of the one which died.
This lil’ one was in the mixed EE pullets bin. Looking at it, it looks JUST like a Buff Orpington chick, which I’m hoping that it ends up being and was just in the wrong group.
This is the Gold Lace Wyandotte.
And in this cor...

I’ve been wanting to keep a few chickens for ages, even before I moved down here and got married. Not too many mind you, but like 5 to 8 or so.
I’d actually mentioned it to the wife a few times and she seems to like the idea. I swear half the stuff I think up that she seems to like is just her humoring me.
From what I’ve read I’m leaning towards Buff Orpingtons since they’re so well natured and can be easily handled.
I’ve no use for a rooster.. I h...

So you’ve decided to fill your garden with joyful chickens…Here are a few tips on raising chickens naturally…Happy healthy chickens make for healthy eggs and less hassle.
Shelter:
Chickens will need adequate shelter. This will depend on your climate and predators. Chickens will need a draft-free dry coop with adequate ventilation. If your climate is cold a heat source should be available for winter. A solid concrete floor or a raised coop are ideal as this will ma...

Before we moved to our new home we discussed having chickens. We would get a few for eggs and perhaps even a few meat birds…BOY WAS I WRONG.
I should have known better that with my personality those birds would win me over – BIGTIME.
We moved into our new home and that summer decided to get 3 hens of almost laying age off a local farmer. We would not name them in fear of getting “attached”. When we spoke of them it was the red one, the black one and the mu...
