My Green "0 Mile Diet"

234 days ago by MsDebbieP | 15 comments »

You’ve heard of the 100 Mile Diet? It’s all about eating locally grown foods in order to reduce transportation costs (and negative effects on the planet) and to increase the nutritional value of the foods we eat. Well, this year I’ve decided to go with the ”0 Mile Diet” as much as possible – with the majority of my fruits and vegetables grown right here in my own backyard. To do this I have: used “square foot gardening” in my typically l...

My Green Strategy

233 days ago by Catspaw | 10 comments »

While trying to expand my gardens, there was one particular problem that started bothering me. Gardening should not be a series of back breaking tasks. As my gardens expanded, nature would take over very quickly. In order to keep up, my investment in labor became overwhelming. There was no way I could keep up with the weeds and bugs and such. Soon, the gardens would be a lost cause. I started understanding the strategies of mechanized farming. Instead of hand grooming this plant and that, it ...

My newest grouch is the difficulty in finding lasting gardening tools. This started when I was helping a friend do some transplanting, and loaned...

A day at the CSA

232 days ago by Jerrica | 5 comments »

I belong to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture for those of you not in the know) and one of the requirements for membership is to spend a work-day on the farm. So yesterday, my husband and I rolled out of bed to be on the road by 7:15, get to the farm by 8, and begin our work-day. DH was in charge of getting directions to the farm. He did not write them down, so we got lost on the way there, natch. Maybe we’ll work on that one later. Arrived at the farm, were greeted by the...
