Although we have a very short growing season and are limited in the fruit varieties that can grow here, I am very lucky for the numerous wild berries that grow in our area. Wild blueberries are abundant although due to urban sprawl many blueberry picking areas are disappearing and the ones that remain are being harvested more densely but even so we still have a bountiful supply of these extremely tasty little berries. The is a great quick and easy dessert to use up over-ripe fruit and berries. Served hot with icecream or even for breakfast with yogurt it is as delicious as it is simple: In any oven safe pan (pie pan, loaf pan, cake pan) place 4 cups of chopped fruit and berries. If the fruit is dry such as apples, stir in 3 tbs of apple sauce. Mix together 4 cups of oats, 2 tbs butter, 1/2tsp cinnamon and 3 tbs dark brown sugar. Wild Berries #2: Well not wild, but in my garden now.

I purchased this high-bush blueberry this spring, the berries are much much larger than our wild ones, but not as tasty, regardless it seems to be doing well. Amazing large and flavourful respberries from a local nursery, 10 roots for $29…Looking good. Everbearing strawberries from Veseys $5 sale…25 plants for $5 and they are doing very well.

This & That 2009 #3: Fruits (& Veggies) of our labour

Things are doing pretty good here. We have been harvesting chinese cabbage for a few weeks now. The spinach is all harvested and I am planning on setting out a fall crop. The greenhouse is busting at the seams with green tomatoes, cucumbers and the pepper plants have started to flower. Strawberries are almost gone and the fragrant squash and melon flowers are in full bloom, some with small fruits. Snap peas are doing great and ready to stir-fry this week….mmmmm.
