My Garden 2008-- the beginning #5: The garden is up and looks healthy.

184 days ago by Bob | 15 comments »

As mentioned I am an ardent composter and have a treasure trove of black nutritious compost that dates back about 20 years. Each year I manage to turn part of it and add new stuff to the pile. These photos show my tomatoes growing in this material and the first flush of fruit is about the size of marbles.I expect to have about 500 sweet 100’s from each container over the summer.I finished filling the other container with the banana potatoes with compost so now we wait for flowering and t...

My Garden 2008-- the beginning #4: The beginning #4

214 days ago by Bob | 12 comments »

Due to time restraints this year my garden is not getting as much care as it should.I had to move the sq foots to build my workshop so some plants didn’t get enough TLCHowever my bananna potatoes did get into the containers I scrounged and are now peaking thru the compost / soil. I will give the 4 plants a couple more days to leaf out and add more mix to the drum. That should net me some nice suppers in august. Eventually they will be up to the rim with a humongous root system ...

Grouch #2: IN SPADES

217 days ago by robertpaul | 5 comments »

Many thanks to Scott’s search prowess in finding sources, albeit hidden, for pro quality garden spades.( I have seen spades that have been sharpened so many times, that the blade was about half the starting size) Nice to know that good quality can be found with enough searching. While going to school, I spend a summer placement at a high end Nursery in Western Mass. Spending most of my time on a landscape crew. The first thing I was instructed in was the many uses of a garden spade. Sort o...

My Garden 2008-- the beginning #1: Spring , why hast thou forsaken me? - just kidding

282 days ago by Bob | 10 comments »

Well I have planted most of the seeds I will have in my garden areas and today I looked out the window, saw my shadow and I predict another 4 weeks of no planting outside. Meanwhile, in the greenhouse the seeds are transforming into Dycotyledons and so far no damp off! Yeah! The few cuttings I saved over are now dipped in root stimulant and pushed into vermiculite for rooting. My squirrels are very pregnant and have moved to their nurseries to whelp. I will move food and water...
