Gardern season is winding down

12 days ago by CraftyGardener | 17 comments »

Gardening season is winding down here in my part of Ontario, Canada. I’ve been busy gathering up all the garden ornaments that add that extra bit of interest to the garden … to windchimes, the danglers, the little statues etc.

Harvest Time...Recipes #15: Harvest Pot-roast

13 days ago by XploreOrganics | 5 comments »

Pot-roast chicken for 2 There is no real recipe but this is one of my favorite meals when working in the garden as it is very simple and it can cook itself while you work up an appetite. there’s nothing like the smell of pot-roast when you come in on a crisp evening good and hungry from working outside. In this picture I put the following in a medium roast pan: 1 bone-in skin-on Chicken breast seasoned with seasalt, pepper and garlic granules (optional)Fresh garden vegetab...

Hops!

16 days ago by scottb | 6 comments »

A while back, my wife gave me a home-brewing kit, and in the past couple years I’ve made several dozen gallons of beer. It’s a quick, and pretty straight forward process, (kinda like following the directions on a box of brownies) yet there is a lot of flexibility and many different recipes to try… though I haven’t made any since last Christmas when I filled the pantry with stout, dopplebock, ale (IPA, pumpkin and apple), pilsner and even a coffee beer. Some were great,...

Nitrogen Fixing Fix-ups

17 days ago by gardenmentor | 6 comments »

Its that time of year again. I’m pulling out summer crops and putting in fall ones. I have a raised bed, my oldest, that has really become depleted. The vegies in it this summer didn’t perform well, and when I tested the soil I was stunned at barely-there amount of nitrogen that registered. I tried to salvage my summer crops with a shot of fish meal, which helped a bit, but I know more work is needed. Frankly, the bed needs a rest. I amend the bed regularly with worm compost, b...

Around the Yard #11: Season's Winding Down

18 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 10 comments »

Took a walk around the yard today with my old Kodak DC290 in hand, figured I’d take a few shots of what’s around the yard. Around front in what I call the courtyard garden by the pond I’d laid out the rocks to edge the new flower bed. I still need to move more rocks over and need to pick up bags of mortar to get them set in place. Also need to mow there for that matter. Out back on the burn pile is the bulk of the damage that Ike caused to the yard. It’s not ...

Our Flower Gardens #22: Easter Lily

20 days ago by MsDebbieP | 8 comments »

Sept. 20, 2008 In the spring I received an Easter Lily and when it died off I took the plant and stuck it in the ground. The other day it was in full bloom. One of my very few flowers in colour now.

Harvest Time #7: Chestnuts

21 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 9 comments »

Thought I’d show off my nuts since there’s been so much interest. All I did for this batch was; 1. Cut an X into the nut shell with a serrated knife.2. Start a pot of water and get it boiling. 3. Once boiling, dump the nuts in. 4. Boil for 15 minutes then strain. 5. Start peeling them. They’d easy to peel when warm. That’s all there is to it.

Grandma's Gardens #20: Small Cement Basket

22 days ago by GrandmaT | 17 comments »

I bought two sizes of cement baskets many years ago now, for our old home, and have had fun over the years filling them with different flowers. The smaller of the two baskets has always been somewhat of a challenge to grow flowers in because the basket truly will only accomodate one plant. Well this year I made a wonderful choice when I planted ONE “neon raspberry” Petunia within it. So while my other containers and baskets are dying back, this little Petunia is blooming like c...
