Anyone out there harvesting during the winter?
I have a small greenhouse structure (12’ x 10’) that my husband built for me and it sure beats the “A” frame I used to create with wire and metal stakes. I can’t crawl under the “A” frame like I used to, or at least un-crawl from it, so he made a stand up, walk around hoop style frame from pvc pipes and joints. It may not be as sturdy as a professionally made one but it’s been up for 3 winters ...

Our local grocer, Wegmans, was selling this touch of Spring for $1.99. Since the thermometer read 13º, could not pass up this chance to brighten our home.

I qualify this as a GT post as it’s where we do all the prep work for what we do in the garden and cooking. ;)
I decided some time ago to change out the sink and faucet, actually had the faucet on hand for over a year. The sink I picked up a few days ago as I got tired of the crappy old faucet dripping and spewing water along the back of the sink.. Yes, I could have fixed it, but… pfffft.
So here it is. Granted I have to remove it later once we’re ready to redo the cab...

A discussion took place, over at HomeRefurbers.com re: the awards of making homemade bread – without a breadmaker machine.
I said that I would post my Pumpernickel recipe here.
Yeast
3 packages of yeast (6 3/4 tsp)
1 1/2 c. warm water.Note: the make-up of the rye flour kills off the yeast, I guess, and so you need lots of yeast to make it rise.
Next: Once “the yeast has riz”, add
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp caraway seed (oooh it smells so yummy)
2 tbsp shortening...

Many of you know the new watchlist feature from our sister websites LumberJocks.com, HomeRefurbers.com and many of you like it there. So I decided to add it here on GT as well.
In summary, I’ve added the Watchlist feature that allows you to be notified – on the Pulse page or also by the emails – about new comments posted… not only on your own posts but on any posts that you add to your personal Watchlist.
So how this works you ask. I tried to keep things as simple and streamlined as pos...

Digging in the dirt can be one of the greatest pleasures of organic gardening. To change garden soil from tight clay to soil that sifts through your fingers, add green manure.
Gorgeous soil in your garden makes all the difference in the world.
A green manure crop is one that can be grown over a season when the bed is not in use, often fall and winter, and later tilled into the soil to improve the fertility. A green manure crop grown over fall and winter also prevents the soil from erod...

How great is this? I can keep up with all the news and happenings on GT with the internet.
I left home on the 15th and arrive in Fort Meyers Beach on Tues. My friends arranged a spot for me to set up my camper right next to the Gulf beach! I went to sleep each night with the sound of the waves lapping gently on the beach.
We went out one evening for supper to a fishery and had a wonderful feast of shrimp!
On Fri. I left FMB and drove over to the Atlantic side where I am now enca...

Want to have more energy and slow aging? Grow beans…
As with almost all homegrown food, your own beans will taste better than store bought varieties. Both fresh and dried green beans are rich in the B vitamins and potassium.
B vitamins help your body make protein and energy. Potassium regulates fluids and electrolytes in the body. The shortage of potassium contributes to muscular fatigue and cramping
They may have even more antioxidants than blueberries and as much cholesterol ...

I spent some time today cleaning up in the yard and burning off a pile of stuff. Ended up burning what was left under the Pecan tree and several of the cherry limbs that had to be removed. Still a PILE left to deal with, unsure what I’m going to do with all that.
By the time I took this, it was a smoldering pile of ash and leaves.
I’ve got to stir it from time to time, else the leaves and whatnot at the bottom will never really burn off. Oh well though if it doesn’t. ...
