Around the Yard #12: Hey Folks!

28 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 8 comments »

Thought I’d stop in and say howdy.. :) Not much going on around here and certainly not much gardening going on. Been busy with the holiday season, for sure. I ended up not being able to get all of the stuff planted that I’d gotten from Lowes, so I used the top of my 75 gallon aquarium as a greenhouse, like it was kinda built for. Originally I had live filtration running up top. Regardless, makes a good holding place for 2 mums (misplaced) and the sedum. Surprisingly s...

Has it really been 43 days?

61 days ago by gardenmentor | 9 comments »

I just dropped by, remembering I hadn’t been to visit Gardentenders in a while. Low & behold, its been 43 days! Where does the time go? Well, since my last posting, my fava beans filled in quite nicely. The squirrels got a few, but there are plenty in the bed—and I never did replant. I’ve been having garden parties with lots of fantastic garden favors that will make my fellow plant geeks green with envy. I’ve gotten my seed garlic in the ground. I signe...

Our "Edibles" #27: Cherries

80 days ago by MsDebbieP | 6 comments »

October 18, 2008 I can’t wait for our cherry tree to have cherries on it! We’re getting close. Maybe next year we’ll have a few handfuls, if we can beat the birds to them. The following is from the Fall, 2008 issue of “Open”; the article is by Lee Anne Andriessen according to the Cherry Nutrition Reposrt, cherries contain 19 times the beta carotene of blueberries and strawberries they also have: vitamin C/E, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate, fibre ...

My Macro Shots #2: Daylily assortment

124 days ago by XploreOrganics | 4 comments »

Last year I ordered the mixed daylilies for naturalizing from Veseys, however when they arrived most were moldy, unusual for Veseys. I called them for a replacement but they were sold out but quickly offered an assortment of their fancy varieties as a replacement, I think the total value was over $100 and I paid $29. I am not sure of the names but here are some that are now in bloom: If you know the names of any of these please let me know.

Bonfire Breakfasts #1: October 08

73 days ago by MsDebbieP | 22 comments »

October 25, 2008 This morning was Bonfire Breakfast. Bright and early (7 AM) family arrived to enjoy our “traditional” bonfire breakfast together. Ok, so the sky wasn’t bright – but it was early! Actually, it was pitch black out and we had the privilege of experiencing Mother Nature’s washing of the world (yes, it was a rainy morning). Our gazebo (that we had built for such weather conditions) is currently holding some big gourds during their drying proc...

Reflection

74 days ago by GrandmaT | 9 comments »

I was putting closure on “My Garden” page for this summer and realized this was one of the most enjoyable summers I have had gardening in a long time. What dawned on me was how this forum and the people on it affected my whole summer. It was like whenever I was outside you were all with me … sharing my joys, excitement and best of all inviting me “over for some ice tea” and to see your beautiful gardens and projects. You folk inspired me to begin thinking outs...

Our "Edibles" #9: Peas

180 days ago by MsDebbieP | 8 comments »

July 9, 2008 First Pickin’s What, you say? Not many peas in that dish? Well, uh, I have to admit that there were a lot more when I was finished harvesting them. (Yummy) I love my fresh peas. I admit it; I don’t apologize for it and I rarely get any peas into the freezer or even onto the table. They go right into my mouth! This year, I planted lots of peas -with the intention of freezing lots for the winter. Well, my first pickins were from a bush pea and even thoug...
